Sports Studies CoursesFacilitiesThe College’s first sports courses were offered in 1999/2000. Since that date the range of courses and the demand for places has grown substantially. To meet that demand the College has invested heavily in resources and now boasts some of the best facilities in the Region. The John Ashby Sports Hall accommodates a full size basketball court, 4 badminton courts, or a volleyball court. The building also houses a small sports therapy centre, a recently refurbished fitness suite, and a dance studio. The Pitsford Sports Arena accommodates indoor hockey and futsal pitches, together with a climbing wall and free weights gymnasium. Four grass hockey pitches, 2 rugby pitches and extensive grass training areas are complemented by specialist artificial turf pitches – rubber crumb for football and rugby, sand-based for hockey and football, and water-based for hockey. Hard courts are also available for tennis and netball. Many of the outdoor areas are floodlit to maximise the hours of use. Outdoor Adventure is part of the Sports Studies subject area and as part of these courses students have access to the College’s sail and motor powered boats which are used on Pitsford reservoir. Cross-country, orienteering and mountain-bike courses are located around the College estate. It is anticipated that construction of a Regional Sports Injury and Rehabilitation Centre, incorporating a 25 metre swimming pool, will commence during 2010. AcademiesMoulton College operates various sports academies that run alongside the academic provision, and are intended for students wishing to develop their skills in a particular sport whilst gaining a nationally recognised qualification. All academies are available to students studying Higher Education courses (HND/Foundation Degree/BA/ BSc) at the College. In addition to the academic programme, students benefit from coaching sessions delivered by professional coaches. These focus on developing physical and mental fitness, technical abilities, tactical awareness, coaching skills and game play. The programmes utilise many of the sports facilities for training purposes, and the wide range of specialist fitness resources are used for conditioning sessions.
