Higher Education Course Information

Moulton College offers learners the opportunity to gain a University qualification with a difference. The college specialises in providing vocational, higher level courses in specialist subjects. This means that although courses are knowledge based, students also undertake a range of practical activities. The courses emphasise the development of employment skills as well as encouraging learners to relate theory to practice, and many opportunities are provided for gaining relevant work experience in your chosen area. The wide range of commercial facilities based on the College campus provides learners with the chance to study within a real business environment that will help prepare them for employment following graduation.

The College prides itself on the superb practical facilities available to its students. As it specialises in vocational programmes, strong emphasis is placed on preparing students for the world of work. All courses include some degree of practical skills development, though the proportion varies according to academic level.

Wherever possible, Moulton operates commercial businesses that provide real work experience opportunities on-site, as well as realistic business data for students to use in the classroom and during project work. The commercial operations are complemented by excellent workshops and practical areas, where students can develop practical skills in a safe and structured environment.

By keeping in close contact with employers, staff understand their needs and what they expect of potential employees. As a result Moulton's courses equip students to compete successfully in the jobs market.

Specialist Higher Education Facilities

The Higher Education Centre provides a quality learning environment exclusively for students following higher education programmes. The centre contains modern classrooms and seminar rooms all with flexible layouts, interactive whiteboards and projectors, and two with a bank of wireless laptops.

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) houses specialist scientific and trade journals along with all the subject specific books, CD ROMs and DVDs students need for their courses. If you are a Higher Education student, additional library services and facilities are available. You have exclusive use of a silent study area and PC suite and you can use the British Library's inter library loan service to obtain journal articles and books not heId by the College. The Learning Resources Centre staff will help you to access all the specialist resources available to you as a higher education student. This includes a large range of on-line resources in your specialist area.

Research at Moulton College

Research is an important part of studying at Higher Education level. Students on Higher Education courses at Moulton all undertake independent projects as part of their programmes of study. These are related to their area of interest and are overseen by a member of the academic staff. The College has an increasing number of staff with research backgrounds as well as a growing number of post-graduate research students. Research undertaken at the College has a direct application to the land based industries and focuses on addressing real issues. Current PhD students at the college are conducting projects in animal welfare, environmental management and sports science. Moulton College works in partnership with a number of other institutions in developing its research work including the other CULTIVA colleges, and a number of universities.

Academic Skills Development

In order to develop their academic skills all students complete a reflective Personal Development Portfolio across the duration of their course with guidance from their personal tutor. This programme is embedded into the curriculum and enables students to develop skills such as oral communication, problem solving and information technology that are crucial in the work place. By reflecting on their performance in assessed work, work placements or during out of college activities, students are able to improve their performance of these essential skills. Module tutors place learning material on the web for students to access and out of class discussion between students on subjects covered in class is encouraged using discussion forums, blogs and wikis.
