Estate Guide - IntroductionThe Farm Guide is designed to give students and other visitors to our farm a brief appreciation of the farm enterprises, their aims, objectives and performance. The day-to-day activities of the farms are reported weekly in the Farm Report. The College currently farms 655.83ha of which 485ha are owned and 169.83ha rented on various Farm Business Tenancy agreements. In August 2004 we took on Manor Farm, Arthingworth, all grass, on a six year Farm Business Tenancy. In August 2007 we purchased an additional 30.76ha of adjoining land at North Farm. All the land is farmed commercially and as such is subject to the normal market forces of the agricultural industry. A map of the Moulton Estate, Boughton Hall Estate and Manor Farm, Arthingworth can be found at the back of this guide. The farm is used extensively for teaching purposes in support of its primary aim of supporting the education and training needs of students on Agricultural, Countryside Management, Horticulture, Equestrian, Sports, Resource Management and Animal Care programmes. A variety of crops are grown including wheat, oats, oilseed rape, forage maize, grass (in both short and longer-term leys), lucerne and stubble turnips for autumn sheep keep. Livestock enterprises include a 350 cow dairy herd; 1000 ewe flock; a calf rearing enterprise rearing replacement youngstock for the dairy herd, male beef calves for sale and a beef finishing enterprise. The farm is managed on a day-to-day basis by a Farm Manager assisted by an Assistant Farm Manager. A Farms Directorate administers the Farm's activities. This Directorate consists of the three members: The Principal, Deputy Principal Resources and Farms Manager. The Directorate meets briefly each week to discuss operational issues and to formulate proposals for discussion by the Governing Body, who exercise their responsibilities via a Resources Committee, which is responsible for all college resources. Eight full-time and one part-time employee staff the farm enterprises. |
