Key Stage 1 - Nature Detectives

Aims of the day (with NC links):

  • To find out about the different plants and animals found at Holdenby. (Science Sc2 5a)
  • To explore the animals found in two different environments - a woodland and a wetland and explore the similarities & differences (Science Sc2 5c)
  • To learn new fieldwork skills (Geography 2b)
  • To use the senses to explore the environment (Science Sc2g)
  • To enjoy being out in the countryside and to learn to care for it (Science Sc2 5c)

Content of the day

  • Welcome and introduction to the day - an introduction to Holdenby, what the children might expect to find, animal homes and habitats and the 'careful collectors code'.
  • Countryside Treasure Trail - Children go out with special treasure bags and follow the clues to discover the different plants and animals at Holdenby.
  • Woodland detective - Children explore the woodland to find the different plants and mini-beasts that live there. We explore homes under logs and on trees, in the undergrowth and leaf litter. Leafy-ometers and mirrors are used to explore the canopy. Children sketch their favourite minibeast and its home. Identification keys for plants and woodland creatures are available.
  • Lunch
  • Pond detective - Children explore the Elizabethan fish pond to find the different creatures that live there. Special games help children with sorting and describing their findings. Identification keys are available.
  • Round-up/question time - The last session to look at and compare the findings from the day before its time to go.
