Key Stage 2 - Food Chains & Falcons

Aims of the day (with NC links):

  • For students to find out the different plants and animals found at Holdenby and assign them to groups. (Science Sc 4b)
  • To explore the pond habitat and the creatures and plants that live there. To explore a wetland food chain. (Science Sc 5b)
  • For students to look at birds of prey and their significance at the top of a food chain. (Science Sc 5d)
  • To learn new fieldwork skills (Geography 2b)
  • To enjoy being out in the countryside

Content of the day

  • Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, animal homes and habitats, introduction to food chains and vocabulary and using keys.
  • Pond creatures & food chains - Children explore the wetland area and pond to find the different plants and creatures that live there. They are encouraged to identify their creatures using keys and to classify them into groups. Children take the part of a pond creature in a web of life game that helps understanding on who is dinner and who is the diner!
  • Lunch
  • Visit to the Bird of Prey Centre - A guided tour of the Bird of Prey Centre to look at the owls, eagles and falcons and to explore their place at the top of a food chain. Watch the birds flying and explore their special adaptations.
  • Round-up/question time - A chance to look at the discoveries of the day and to play a game of 'Animal Consequences' before its time to go.
