Key Stage 2 - Homes and Habitats
Aims of the day (with NC links):
- To explore the woodland habitat and the animals and plants that live there and assign them to groups. To explore a woodland food chain. (Science Sc 4b, 5 a, b)
- For students to look at birds of prey and their habitat and significance at the top of the food chain. (Science Sc 5 c, d)
- To learn new fieldwork skills (Geography 2b)
- To enjoy being out in the countryside
Content of the day
- Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, the different habitats and the animals that live on the estate. Game of 'Who's who in the woodland?'
- Wildlife in the Woodland - Using information cards about different woodland animals, children explore the woodland and fill in their wildlife passports, with all the information about a particular animal . Children also look at small woodland mammals close up and collect some woodland minibeasts and use keys to help classify them.
- Woodland Food Chain Game - Children are given an animal identity and wearing special animal masks, play a woodland food chain game.
- Lunch
- Animal Estate Agents or Visit to bird of prey centre:
- Children work in small groups on the estate, locating a suitable home for their animal and being 'animal estate agents', or
- A visit to the Bird of Prey centre to find out more about the habitats and homes of these amazing birds. Find out about owls, eagles and falcons and watch them fly!
