Holdenby - Key Stage 2 - Literacy

Woodland

Key Stage 2 - Literacy Day

Aims: To use the environment at Holdenby to help develop literacy skills such as listening, speaking, rhyming and extending vocabulary in a different way.

Content of the day

  • Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, woodlands and their creatures, the countyside code. Using poems.
  • Poetry Trail - Children use a map to explore the estate and find the lines of jumbled poetry amongst the trees and plants. They then gather at the outdoor classroom and put the lines back into the right order to make the poem complete.
  • Creature features - Children explore the different creatures that live in the woodland. This begins with a look at small mammals followed by a bug hunt to find woodland creatures. Children can sketch their findings and write key words to describe them. Back in the classroom, children work in pairs to describe their creatures, without using the correct names, whilst others in the class have to guess their creatures.
  • Lunch
  • Recording Stations - In groups, children have a hand held tape recorder and explore the environment at Holdenby, making recordings of their observations and impressions as they go. Ideas of areas to explore are provided and groups must make 10 stops in total. Back in the classroom, each group plays back their tape and guess the locations described.
