Key Stage 2 - Numeracy Day
Aims: To use the environment at Holdenby to help develop numeracy skills such as counting, measuring, tallies, frequencies, symmetry and spirals in a different way.
Content of the day
- Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, woodlands and ponds and their creatures and the 'careful collectors code'.
- Numeracy Trail - Children use a map and clues to explore the estate and its plants and animals whilst solving numeracy questions along the trail. Children estimate height, measure length, use counting and solve problems.
- Symmetry and Spirals in the woodland - Children explore the woodland for minibeasts and their homes and after studying the number of legs and segments, can classify them into groups. Lines of symmetry can be drawn. Leaves from trees can also be collected and lines of symmetry drawn. A range of natural items that include spirals can be found and the spirals highlighted and pupils can make their own spirals in the woodland with natural materials.
- Lunch
- Counting Pondlife - During this afternoon session, children explore the pond for creatures and make tallies and frequency recordings of their findings.
- Round up/questions - A time to reflect on the day and the findings made.
