Key Stage 2 - Trees and Plants
Aims of the day (with NC links):
- To identify the different trees and plants found at Holdenby and assign them to groups (Science Sc2, 4a, b, c)
- To investigate the variety of plants living in different habitats (Science Sc2 5b)
- To learn new fieldwork skills (Geography 2b, c, 7c)
- To enjoy being in the countryside
- To investigate and draw various shapes, colours and textures of trees (Art 1c, 4a)
Content of the day
- Welcome and introduction to the day - An introduction to woodlands, trees, seasons and parts of trees and plants (including fruits and seeds).
- Woodland explorer - Students investigate a number of trees and plants within the woodland and surrounding area. They identify species by their leaves, fruit, flowers etc using keys. Students explore how the plants can be grouped. Tree ID quiz.
- Lunch
- Tree expert - Students identify one tree and find out all about it! Measurements of girth and calculations of height are taken, as well as briefly exploring the life it supports. Students then sketch their tree in its surroundings looking at shape, colour and texture, and can write a short description of what they have discovered.
- Round up/question time - A time to share findings and sketches from the day and ask questions.
