Key Stage 3 - Food Chains
Aims of the day (including NC links):
- For pupils to find out the different plants and animals in a pond habitat and classify them. (Sc2 4b, 5b)
- To explore adaptations of species in the pond. (Sc2 5c)
- To construct pond food chains and webs (Sc2 5e)
- To find out about birds of prey and their significance at the top of a food chain. (Sc 2 5 d, e)
- To learn new fieldwork skills
- To enjoy being out in the countryside.
- Links with QCA Scheme of Work for Environment and Feeding Relationships.
Content of the day
- Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, plants & animals to be found, food chains & webs, vocabulary and using keys.
- Ponds and food chains - Pupils explore the pond to find the different plants and creatures that live there. They are encouraged to identify creatures using keys and to classify them into groups. Pupils use workcards to explore the adaptations and food chains of one creature. A web of life game helps to clarify the complex relationships in food webs.
- Lunch
- Visit to the Bird of Prey Centre - A guided tour of the Bird of Prey Centre to look at the owls, eagles and falcons and to discover their place in a food chain & web. Watch the birds flying and explore their special adaptations.
- Round up/questions - A chance to look at the discoveries of the day and play a game of 'Animal Consequences'.
