Key Stage 3 - Land Use, Farming and the Environment

Aims of the day (including NC links):

    • To discover how the land at Holdenby is used in farming and how this has changed over time (Geography 3e, 6d)
    • To use maps of the estate to identify different areas (Geography 2e, 7c)
    • To explore how the environment at Holdenby is managed sustainably (Geography 5b, 6j)
    • To explore a variety of wildlife and habitats on the estate
    • To learn new fieldwork skills (Geography 2b)
    • To enjoy being out in the countryside

    Content of the day

    • Welcome and introduction to the day - A brief history of the Holdenby estate, focusing on farming and land use and how it has changed over time.
    • Tractor Trail - Pupils hop onto the tractor trailer for a guided tour of the estate by an experienced farmer. Pupils look at the crops, land use, animals and history of the estate and how it has developed, collecting samples along the way. Sustainable management of the environment is highlighted.
    • Estate Trail - Pupils discover the different wildlife habitats of the estate on this trail with their map and compass. They follow a circular route around the estate, stopping off at points of interest.
    • Lunch
    • Wildlife and Environmental Management at Holdenby - Students explore the wildlife at Holdenby close-up. Small mammals are studied and students find out how the environment is managed by the gamekeeper. Students then undertake a hedgerow species survey.
    • Round up/questions - Students have an opportunity to ask questions about the visit.
