Aims of the day (including NC links):
- For pupils to find out the different plants and animals in a woodland and pond habitat (Sc2 5b)
- To classify and compare animals of woodland and pond (including the use of keys) (Sc2 4b)
- To explore variation in woodland plants and animals and the environmental reasons for this (Sc 2 4a)
- To explore adaptations of species in a pond or woodland (Sc2 5c)
- To learn new fieldwork and scientific enquiry skills.
- To enjoy being out in the countryside.
Content of the day
Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, plants & animals to be found, vocabulary and using keys. Further information relevant to your area of study.
Choose 2 of the following investigations for the day:
- Compare diversity of minibeasts from 2 different sections of woodland using a variety of trapping techniques.
- Compare leaf size in plants of light and shade, e.g brambles or ivy.
- Identify and count pond species to measure water quality in the pond.
- Compare diversity of plants and trees in 2 different sections of woodland.
- Compare the diet of a wild and captured bird of prey by examining pellets.
- Investigate two hedgerows for their suitability for wildlife.
