Key Stage 3 - Nature Detectives
Aims of the day (including NC links):
- For pupils to find out the different plants and animals in a woodland and pond habitat (Sc2 5b)
- To classify animals of woodland and pond (including the use of keys) (Sc2 4b)
- To explore variation in woodland plants and the environmental reasons for this (Sc 2 4a)
- To learn new fieldwork skills
- To enjoy being out in the countryside.
- Links with QCA Scheme of Work for 'Variation & Classification'
Content of the day
- Welcome and introduction to the day - Introduction to Holdenby, plants & animals to be found, classification, vocabulary and using keys.
- Woodland Detective
a. Woodland creatures - Pupils explore the woodland to find the different creatures that live there. This includes some small mammal trapping and looking for minibeasts. Pupils use keys to help identify and classify their findings and record them.
b. Woodland plants - Pupils undertake an investigation of woodland plants to find out variations with light and shade. Pupils record their findings and draw conclusions.
- Pond Detective - Pupils explore the pond habitat to find different creatures that live there. Keys are used to help pupils sort and classify their findings. Back in the classroom, pupils have a chance to compare their findings from the morning and afternoon sessions.
- Round up/question time - A chance to look at the discoveries of the day and play a game of 'Animal Consequences'.
