Key Stage 3

For Key Stage 3 groups the Centre offers a "mix and match" style of programmes. Teachers can choose 2-3 activities to build a day that suits their topic. The focus of many of these activities can be adjusted to match the topic, e.g. pond dipping can be used to investigate food chains, biodiversity, pollution or adaptations.

Your visit will be planned with the Schools Centre Teacher during a pre-visit to the centre, where you will be able to explore the facilities and discuss the objectives for your visit.

Key Stage 3 activities include:

  • Pond dipping
  • Investigating trees
  • Small mammal trapping
  • Population estimates (capture-mark-recapture)
  • Woodland invertebrates
  • Grassland invertebrates
  • Helpful Hedgerows
  • All about soil
  • Tree identification
  • Owl pellet dissection
  • Falconry visit (additional charge)

There are also the following investigations available:

  • Compare invertebrates from contrasting habitats
  • Investigate the effect of light availability on leaf size
  • Investigate the effect of trampling on plant species diversity
