Foundation and Key Stage 1 - Teddy Bears' Picnic

You receive a letter from the Chief Teddy Bear inviting your teddy bear for a visit to Holdenby to discover more about how animals can find what they need to stay alive in the woods.

When you arrive at the centre, you are welcomed with a story about how bears found all their needs of life in the woodlands before men came and chopped down the trees.

Children set off on a walk to discover the environment using all their senses, collecting items in special treasure bags.

Fun activities and games highlight the needs of all bears. Children learn the secret of 'PAWS': PLANTS FOR FOOD, AIR, WATER and SHELTER - the basic things a bear needs to stay alive.

Lunchtime is spent together in the woodland, once the children have caught up with their bears who have left a trail of paw-prints.

In the afternoon, in small groups, the children create a miniature desert island for the teddies to live on, using what they have learnt in the morning to provide food, air, water and shelter for the bears.

And after all that... It's time to go home, because they're tired little teddy bears.
