Research - Animal Welfare

Animal welfare now assumes greater importance in terms of the management of both production systems and captive animal collections.

Extensive work with captive animals in zoos has taught us much about animal perception and the links between imposed captivity, stress and behaviour.

Emphasis is now being placed on the welfare assessment of production species as well as the treatment of abnormal behaviours in companion animals.

An understanding of behaviour can provide a sound platform for the improvement of welfare for all captive animal species.

Moulton College is well placed to undertake research in this area. A number of the staff within the subject area have engaged in significant research activity and have a combined breadth of experience in the assessment of welfare in a range of species.

The College is based in a mixed farming area and runs its own North Country mule sheep flock and dairy herd. Recent research work at the College has included the assessment of welfare in our own high yielding dairy cows. In addition to the agricultural connection, several staff have strong links with zoological societies and professional bodies within the animal welfare sector.
