Research - Environment Management

Correct management of the countryside is critical if we are to maintain the biodiversity of the environment.

Trees play a vital role in sustaining the health of the natural environment on a local, national and global scale.

Natural habitats are under increasing pressure from development and research grounded in environmental monitoring is central to their protection and continued survival.

Staff within this subject area at Moulton are particularly interested in conservation and protection of the natural environment in many forms. Previous work has focused on the water treatment potential of reed beds and the protection of woodland habitats that are heavily used for recreation.

The College has a 450 hectare estate which incorporates many different types of habitat. Recent trial work has included the establishment of a number of tree trial plots. These are currently being used to assess the influence of water availability on tree establishment, a topic of particular interest in the context of new woodland development and the changing land use priorities for the countryside.
