Areas of Teaching Expertise

Horticultural and plant science.

Research Interests and Current Research

Russell's research interests involve the application of plant science to the horticultural industry and the use of horticulture as a plant conservation tool:

The manipulation long distance signals to improve plant quality, reduce costs and water use on ornamental nurseries.

Improving the propagation on hardy nursery stock plants by controlling the plant stress response in cuttings and grafted trees and shrubs.

The pollination ecology and cultivation of East Asian shade tolerant plants (Asarum and Aspidistra).

The propagation and conservation of the African plum (Prunus Africana).

The reintroduction of 'lost' varieties of horticultural crops.
