College Basketball
This year the Men’s squad are the Elite Basketball BCS National Champions winning the title at the finals held at Loughborough. They qualified for the final by winning the BCS East Midlands League. The following students have achieved representative honours and/or been offered basketball scholarships abroad:
And former Basketball Academy students have gone on to achieve further success: Nick Mabbett, who has just completed his second year at the FSU Academy in Iceland, has been offered a full scholarship at North West Nebraska Junior College. Nick will take up his place late in August. Chris Caird, another player who opted to continue playing in Iceland, has impressed the FSU coaches so much that they have offered him a playing contract for the 2009 / 2010 season. Chris will play in the Icelandic Super league and will be out to impress the new coach Rob Newson, who just happens to be English. For Josh Merrington it’s been a case of the good news followed by the bad news. Having completed two successful years at Mercer Community College in New Jersey Josh was offered a partial scholarship at Gettysburg University. Unfortunately for Josh he picked up a serious knee injury in his last game of the season and won’t be able to take up his place. He has decided to start a Sports Science course at Northumbria University with an option to return to America if surgery on his knee is successful. Crystal Sterling continued with her success when she gained selection for the English Universities team which won the Four Countries Championships. Crystal who is a student at the University of Worcester also had a very successful year with the South Birmingham National League club.
