The Moulton College 'B' team went down against New College, Nottingham 'A' team but despite the defeat turned in a spirited performance. Moulton made an excellent start to the game with a 19-11 lead after the first period of play. This lead was based on some excellent defence and a number of fast breaks orchestrated by Cory Ramage and finished by Craig Hampton. NCN shaded the second quarter but Moulton still led at half time by 34 points to 29. NCN were employing an aggressive zone press defence which Moulton had coped with extremely well in the first half but all this changed in the last two quarters. Time and time again Moulton turned the ball over against the NCN pressure resulting in easy scored for the visitors. Trailing by just five points at 48-53 going into the final quarter Moulton opened the period by missing three easy scoring opportunities. Unfortunately one or two heads 'went down' and NCN were able to capitalise and take the game by 16 points. For Moulton Craig Hampton and Chris Dalton were the top scorers with 13 points apiece while Asher Kirby worked hard for his 8 points haul. FootballMen's Football: British Colleges Sport League
Moulton College 2 entertained top of the league New College Nottingham on a dull Wednesday afternoon, the game however was not! From the first whistle NCN attacked the Moulton goal with some slick moves. Moulton defended well and managed to work the occasional counter attack but the physical dominance of NCN began to take its toll with Moulton needing to make to subs on the 20min mark. NCN then scored 2 quick goals to give them a comfortable halftime lead. The second half play was a continuation of the first with only Matt Pheely for Moulton showing the determination needed to haul Moulton back into the game. NCN scored a further 2 before Ryan Cherry grabbed a consolation goal following a smart run and a good ball from Connor Clyne. The game finished 4-1 to NCN and with it ended Moulton's challenge for the title. Basketball"Moulton College storm into quarter finals of the Colleges & Academies Championship."English Schools Basketball Association - Colleges & Academies Championship 4th Round
The Moulton College 'A' team advanced to the quarter of the Colleges & Academies Championship despite fielding a much weakened team against Wigan and Leigh College. Moulton's opponents initially proved to be s difficult hurdle to overcome playing an uncompromising zone defence and breaking rapidly from that zone. For their part Moulton were below their best and seemed to be suffering from the long journey, Eventually Moulton were able to gain the upper hand and by the end of the first quarter had established a 30-23 lead but an injury to Shane D'Allessandro meant they were weakened even more. Playing an aggressive full court pressing defence Mouton were forcing a number of errors from the Lancastrians and extended their lead to 15 points by the middle of the second period of play. They were then guilty of some undisciplined play and by half time their lead had been reduced to 10 points at 54-44. At half time Coaches Dunning and Collins emphasised the importance of good execution on offence and protecting the backcourt from breakaway attacks. At the start of the third period Moulton did just that and a 15-2 charge took them away from the home side. Time and again Wigan and Leigh's offences were thwarted and Jonny Yates was on hand to launch Moulton counter attacks. When initial shots were missed Moulton's taller players even without the injured Dan Shaw, were able to score from offensive rebounds. Moulton took the quarter 27-13 to lead 81-57 and by now the Wigan and Leigh players were showing signs of fatigue. Moulton's superior fitness really told in the final quarter which they won 21-11 to take the game 102-68. In the 34 points win Jake Wyatt top scored with 25 points and he received excellent support from Jermaine Laing and Leon Henry who scored 19 and 15 points respectively. In the absence of Dan Shaw, Matt Usher deputised well with 14 points while Luke Griffiths chipped in with 12. In the next round Moulton will play either York College or perennial quarter final opponents Loretto College form Manchester. FootballGirl's Football: British Colleges Sport League
Despite an early start and a tiring journey to Scunthorpe, Moulton College Girl's Football team certainly proved the old adage of a game of two halves with their display. Slow out of the blocks, Moulton girl's found it difficult to penetrate the John Leggott defence. Despite a number of shots from Jordan Bateman and Becki Gordon neither was able to trouble the opposition goalkeeper. After 20 minutes John Leggott pushed on hard and despite some outstanding saves by goalkeeper Shana Haynes, the home team had a lucky break and found their way through Moulton College's makeshift back four. The half ended with Moulton College trailing one goal to nil. At the beginning of the 2nd half the Moulton College coach made a couple of tactical changes which soon paid off with Becki Gordon latching onto a pinpoint cross from Sarah Judge to draw level. With the bit between their teeth, Moulton started to dominate the game. Some excellent interchanges between Claudia Trottman and Mikaela Welford saw the latter score twice in quick succession to make the score 3 -1. Continual pressure paid dividends as Becki Gordon completed the scoring with a 'thumping' shot past the keeper. The game ended 4 -1 to Moulton College. Men's Football: British Colleges Sport League
Moulton College 2nd team lined up knowing that a win against their rivals Wyggeston, Queen Elizabeth College from Leicester would put them into the title race. Within 15 minutes of the start they found themselves 2 goals up thanks to Dan Binns and Ryan Cherry. From then on the game was dominated by Moulton College as they set up camp in the opposition half before Ash Ferguson grabbed a spectacular first half hat-trick and goals from Connor Clyne and Malachi Noble game the home side a 7-0 lead at half time. The 2nd half saw Moulton College relax and enjoy their football allowing the opposition to come into the game before Dan Binns then made it 8-0 with a back heel. Queen Elizabeth scored 2 late goals to finish with an 8-2 victory to Moulton. Academy Men's Football: English Colleges Football Association
Moulton began in a very sloppy and slow manner, but as the game progressed they started to take control of the match with Dean Lukeman and Mitch Brent working well down both flanks. With most of the play in the opposition's half, Niall Cooper became mainly a bystander in goal. In contrast the opposition's keeper was having a very busy afternoon with Joe Power and Mark Pryor coming very close to breaking the deadlock. The second half started a lot brighter than the first with Joe Power having a good game up front, holding the ball up and bringing the midfield into play. Moulton started to play some very neat and attractive football carving out chance after chance without being able to beat the opposition's keeper, who was having a great game. With ten minutes to go Lewis Legore put an inch perfect cross into the box. Todd Jenner who had made a great run to get on to the cross, put the ball wide from 4 yards with the goal gaping. It looked as though Moulton were never going to make the breakthrough until a well worked interchange of passes between Brent and Power around the box resulted in a thundering a shot into the bottom corner from Brent to give Moulton the lead. Overall Moulton deserved the victory even though they could have made life easier for themselves with a bit of luck and better finishing. The game was marred by a serious injury to a West Anglian player who dislocated his knee-cap - we all wish him a speedy recovery. RugbyMoulton College Just Two Games from a Twickenham Final! Round 6 Daily Mail U18 Cup
Moulton College hosted Norwich School on Tuesday 21st January in round 6 of the Daily Mail Cup. The match was always going to be a tough and nervous encounter as both teams would lack competitive fixtures following the festive break and the recent cold snap. However Moulton started very brightly looking resplendent in their GSS Architecture sponsored playing strip and dominated the possession and territory in the early exchanges. This dominance was proving hard to capitalise on due to some strong defence by Norwich, but also some poor decision-making by the Moulton side. It took a good penalty kick by Dan McNally to get the score board moving and this seemed to energise the Moulton side into producing a series of good attacking plays. Unfortunately for Moulton during this period they lost their fullback, Charlie Sadler. However, despite this, Moulton increased the pressure and finally a good try was scored by Aaron Goodman giving just reward for the team's efforts. A good kick by Ben Nutley allowed Moulton back into the game straight away and they started applying pressure to a very well organised and committed Norwich side. This organised defence provided Norwich with an intercepted try which was converted with ease. Moulton's skipper Dan Brotherton called for accuracy and control and he got exactly that with some very strong scummaging and line out work from the forwards. This set piece work coupled with some direct running from the centre pairing of Corey Hircock and Sam Collins allowed Dan McNally to put Mike Haywood through a well created gap in the Norwich defence and score under the posts. Dan McNally converted this try with ease and Moulton headed into the break 15-7 ahead. The second half was a completely different affair with Moulton being under pressure from a resurgent Norwich team. Some committed defending was required to limit Norwich to a penalty in the 60th minute. The defensive line was tested again and again with Moulton unable to relieve the pressure. It was not until the last 5 mins of the game that Moulton seemed to wake up and made some good tactical decisions to gain territory, and toward the end of the game it was Norwich who had to defend. The relief when the final whistle was blown was evident both on the touch line and on the field with Moulton winning 15-10, and going into the ¼ finals. With a place in the final at Twickenham just two rounds away, the Moulton players will have learnt a great deal from the game, and gain confidence from knowing that they can win the big games.
Moulton College recorded their 2nd win in the week and with this progressed into the semi-final of the BCS (British Colleges of Sport) East Midlands cup with a convincing win over a valiant Derby College. Unfortunately for an injury ravaged Derby side they were only able to field 13 players so the fixture was played as a 10 a side game. Because of the extra space available in the 10 a side format it created a great deal of space for the Moulton College backs to attack and attack they did. Derby College were struggling from the off and a nice 2v1 was converted on the wing allowing Jack Lines over the try line within the first minute of the game. For Derby this proved to be the tale of the match with Moulton executing the basics well and running hard into the gaps created. The game finished 50-5 to a rampant Moulton College side and it is onto the semi final where the team will face either New College Notts or Grimsby College. Netball
This week Moulton were expecting the worst having previously lost 84 - 4 to Loughborough College. The girls played extremely well and managed to slow the game down considerably, taking time to think about where they were passing. The final score reflected their hard work this year. Their good sportsmanship also came through, playing against an aggressive opposition the girls kept their cool and did not retaliate. They should all be pleased with their performance and look forward to their last match of the season in two weeks time. BasketballDespite numerous injuries and illnesses Moulton College still managed to field three teams in various competitions but all three teams were beaten. British Colleges Male Elite Cup 2nd Round
Last season Moulton reached the semi final of this competition but they were dumped out of this season's competition by a talented South East Essex College side. Moulton held the lead until midway through the third period of play with the home side struggling to cope with the athleticism of Moulton captain Jermayne Laing. Once in front however SEEC were able to close out the game in the fourth quarter. In that quarter Moulton's main threat came from Jake Wyatt who scored ten points in that final ten minutes. In the 15 points set back Laing scored 30 points and Wyatt 20 while Leon Henry and Jonny Yates provided good support with 14 and 13 points respectively. British Colleges Female Cup 1st Round
Moulton exited the British Colleges Cup at the first hurdle going down by 17 points to perennial rivals Bilborough College. It is unfortunate that two of the better teams in the country are both situated in the East Midlands and therefore play each other in the early stages of every Cup competition. Moulton travelled to Nottingham without two of there leading players but were competitive with their opponents throughout the first quarter. Bilborough fielding two England internationals eased away in the second quarter and led 34-24 at half time. Bilborough continued to hold the advantage in the second half despite the efforts of the Moulton girls and the 17 points defeat represented a tremendous effort from all six players. In the 67-50 defeat Chloe Moss top scored with 17 points while Katie Bayliss contributed 14. British Colleges Male Non-Elite Cup 2nd Round
The Moulton College 'B' team made the long journey to Scunthorpe for this Non-Elite Cup game in the knowledge that because of an administrative error they would be eliminated from the competition anyway. After the long journey to North Lincolnshire the Moulton boys made a sluggish start to the game and found themselves trailing 20 points to 6 after the first period of play. Things improved in the second quarter but Moulton still trailed 40-18 at half time. A switch to a zone defence for the second half put a completely different complexion on the game and Moulton won both the third and fourth periods to finally go down by 14 points, Coach John Collins was full of praise for all eight of his players who all gave a 100% effort. FootballGirl's Football: British Colleges Sport League
Despite the severe cold weather, Moulton College Girl's football team produced a dogged and passionate performance against league opposition in the form of Bilborough College in a 5 goal thriller. Moulton College made the early breakthrough with a well work interchange of passes between Jordan Bateman and Claudia Trottman to feed Becky Gordon with a perfect through ball to put the home side ahead after just 15 minutes. As the half progressed the Bilborough keeper made some excellent saves as the Moulton's midfield pushed forward at every opportunity. However the away team nipped in 5 minutes before half time to bring things level. The second half continued in the same manner as the first with both teams pushing for superiority. Shana Haynes pulled off two consecutive saves to deny Bilborough's forward line before Moulton fell behind to two well worked set pieces. With 8 minutes remaining Becky Gordon pulled one back with a superb chip over the keeper to make for a tense finale but Bilborough held firm to win the game 3 - 2. Men's Football: British Colleges Sport League
Despite the weather Moulton College 2nd team travelled to Grimsby to play a Franklin College side that where unbeaten and sitting top of the table. From the Kick off Moulton began playing some very neat football with Captain Joe Merril dictating the play for the away side. 10 Minutes into the first half Moulton got their reward for a bright start when Ryan Cherry smashed in a 25yard effort following a passage slick passing from the lads. As the half progressed Franklin began to get into their stride but 2 fine saves from Matt Hopson in goal ensured that Moulton took their lead into half time. The Second half was much a continuation of the first with both sides playing some attractive football on what was an increasingly deteriorating surface. As the half progressed Franklin were getting desperate for a equaliser and began pushing men forward, this allowed Moulton more freedom going forward and again it was Ryan Cherry who benefitted with a volley from just inside the penalty area to make it 2-0. With this Franklin mounted a charge and pushed forward and with time running out Matt Hopson pulled off some outstanding saves to keep Moulton ahead and although Franklin pulled a goal back late on, Moulton defended strongly to see out a much deserved victory against a very good outfit.
