It was perfect playing conditions at Moulton College when the Football Academy were hosting Newcastle under Lyme in the semi finals of the British Colleges Elite East and West Midlands Cup. Moulton College dominated possession for the first 20 minutes going close with shots from Joe Power and Dean Lukeman. On the half hour after persistent pressure from the home side, Enzo Carillo scrambled the ball over the goal line to put the home team in front. The academy team continued to dominate the game but could not find a way past the resolute defending by the opposition. Early in the second half, the home team had a few scares as Newcastle played a number of speculative shots that tested Niall Cooper in goal. A sublime pass and cross from Dean Lukeman saw Tom Fitzjohn with the opportunity to put Moulton College further ahead and he duly obliged to make the score 2 - 0 to the home side. Newcastle heads went down and they felt the full force of the academy bombard them for the remaining 20 minutes of the game. Moulton College can now look forward to the finals against Sutton Coldfield next month. HockeyEast Midlands Regional Hockey Tournament at Moulton College (25/2/09)Moulton College boys and girls team were runners up in their respective British Colleges Sport East Midlands Tournaments. This was the first tournament held on Moulton's international standard water-based Astroturf. The boys squad were undefeated all day but goal difference saw them miss out on top spot. Their first game against Bilborough saw Moulton under a great deal of pressure, but with resilient goalkeeping from Rob Paul, Moulton held the eventual champions to a 0-0 draw. Their second match was against Lincoln where, despite a scrappy game, Moulton won 4- 1 with goals from Grant Cherry, Laurence Mead, Rhys Soltau and Tom Warburton. Their third and final match was against John Leggott College, where Moulton dominated but were unable to find that elusive goal until a penalty was awarded in the final minute and was neatly converted by Tom Warburton. Moulton had to rely on the result of Bilborough vs Lincoln. However, Bilborough ran out 4-0 winners and though they had the same number of points, Bilborough won the tournament with a 2 goal advantage.
Boys squad: Rob Paul (GK), Ben Ord, Richard Toottell, Danny Whitfield, Laurence Mead ©, Rhys Soltau, Naisan Dehghani, Grant Cherry, Tom Langford, Tom Warburton, Alex Blunt, Charlie Sadler, Mike Heywood. The girls competition started off emphatically for the debutant Moulton team with a comfortable 6 - 0 win over Bilborough, with goals from Gemma White, Mollie Gardener, Laura Whittle and Jess Lovell. Their second game was a much more closely contested affair and resulted in a 0- 0 draw with Lincoln College with Shana Haynes making her debut in goal. Their final game was the deciding match of the tournament where Moulton's superior goal difference needed a minimum of a draw with their closest competitors John Leggott College to ensure first place and to represent the East Midlands at the National Championships. However, it was John Leggott who scored early in the game and despite numerous attempts on goal and a last minute penalty corner, Moulton were unable to find an equaliser and the game ended John Leggott 1 Moulton College 0.
Girls Squad: Shana Haynes (GK), Laura Whittle ©, Danielle Rolfe, Becky Hargin, Jess Lovell, Mollie Gardener, Bethany Stacey, Jess Kendall, Jenna Looker, Gemma White, Lottie Allnat, Jade Gowan. Basketball"Moulton College exit College and Academies Championship."ESBBA Colleges and Academies Championship - Quarter Final (25/2/09)
A Moulton College 'A' team depleted by injuries and illness travelled to Manchester for their Colleges and Academies quarter final game against Loreto College and finished on the wrong end of a 76-56 score line. After the long journey to the north west Moulton needed a good start but from the outset were struggling against an athletic Loreto team, Midway through the first quarter Loreto were leading 8-7 but over the next five minutes they outscored Moulton 17-6 to take a 25-13 lead. The following three periods were all close but all three edged by Loreto who were able to keep the Moulton scoring threats at bay by the use of a zone defence that cut out all close to the basket scoring opportunities. Moulton's cause wasn't helped by some wayward perimeter shooting. Even so a 9-zero charge at the start of the fourth quarter brought Moulton to within 16 points of their opponents and just the glimmer of a chance of victory. In the event Loreto responded with a 10-2 run and it was game over. In the disappointing loss Jermayne Laing top scored with 17 points while Jake Wyatt gave good support with 13 points and he also hauled down six rebounds' Jonny Yates scored 10 points but no other Moulton player could get into double figures. "Moulton College 'B' Team second best to West Notts."British Colleges Midlands Participation League (25/2/09)
The game started well with both teams trading baskets in the first 8 minutes keeping the score level, then through some bad defending and poor decision making on the offensive end West Notts went on a 10 -0 run to end the first quarter leading by 14 points. The second quarter went in a similar manner with the visitors out scoring Moulton 12 -0 in a four minute period to end the quarter up by 32. With a long half time talk and some re organisation on court Moulton came out with a new sense of urgency to pull the game back to within 25 points mainly through some good work defensively by Chris Knight and Craig Hampton and on the offensive end by Cory Ramage and Matt Quinney. However a lack of concentration for the last 4 minutes saw West Notts outscoring Moulton 17-2 to end the 3rd quarter up 38 points. The 4th saw Moulton play some of the best basketball they have all year with the combination of Cory Ramage and Craig Hampton working well to open up the West Notts defence and cause them some serious problems. This new found energy and effort meant the Moulton B team winning the last quarter 22-18 and ending the game on a real positive note. Most Valuable Player - Craig Hampton 17 points and an excellent defensive and offensive effort in an unfamiliar position. RugbyAASE League
Moulton College hosted Myerscough at the Holcot pitch and it was a game that had everything with drama right from the start of the warm up with England College's and Northampton Saints academy player Kenny Jones pulling up with a hamstring injury. In what was billed as being a bruising encounter it looked like the scales were tipping in Myerscoughs' favour. However the Moulton College team were determined to make up for their recent ¼ final loss and started the game much the stronger with skipper Danny Brotherton chasing hard on the kick off and turning the ball over. The early pace and ferocity of Moulton's game caught the visitors off guard and Mike Hogan was soon given a chance to convert a penalty after Myerscough were caught off side. Mike Hogans penalty made it a near perfect start for the home team. It was not long till the kicking tee was needed again as Mike Hogan was asked to convert a try from Jack Lines which was a result of some good continuity, accurate passing, pace and Jacks finishing ability. It was some of the best rugby Moulton had played this year. The pressure was unrelenting and despite some strong defence from the visitors it was not long until they infringed again and Mike Hogan successfully converted another penalty. The game settled down for a period with the visitors waking up from their long bus journey and starting to dominate in the scrum causing problems for Moulton. However, once the ball was free it was the accuracy at the breakdown, leg drive in contact and the support play from the Moulton team that had Myerscough reeling having to give another penalty away to stop the pressure. This converted penalty sparked Moulton into life and some good interplay between Sam Collins and Jack Lines saw Jack cross the line for the second time. Myesrcough came back from the try putting pressure on the Moulton line for the first time forcing Moulton to give away their first penalty of the game allowing Myesrcough onto the scoreboard at the stroke of half-time seeing Moulton 19-3 ahead and looking in control of the fixture. The second half started brightly again for Moulton but Myerscough weathered the early storm and started to gain territory leading to a Moulton infringement, for not rolling away at the tackle, which the Myesrcough 10 converted with ease. The game then became a war of attrition with both sides defending hard and some big tackles coming in from both teams. Unfortunately for Moulton, Ben Criddle who was having an outstanding game at 10, came off the worse when he made a tackle and had to be stretchered off the pitch. Thankfully everything was ok but the game was delay for around 20 minutes. With only 10 minutes left in the game it was Myerscough who recovered first from the break driving deep into Moulton territory gaining a line out 5 metres out. Defence of a driven line out again proved to be the Achilles heel of the Moulton team with Myesrcough bulldozing over for a converted try. Moulton bounced back and were pressurising the Myerscough team line when the final whistle was blown leaving Moulton the deserved 19-13 winners. FootballMen's Football
Following several weeks without a match due to the snow, the Moulton College Football Academy team was happy to get a game under their belt. As a bottom of the table clash, this game was a 'six pointer' with all to play for. The players were clearly motivated to prove a point that their position did not reflect their ability and with a number of games in hand, this was an ideal opportunity to gain some ground on the teams above them. From the whistle, Moulton College pushed hard against a younger team from Market Harborough. As the half progressed Moulton capitalised on their physical advantage and Joe Power opened the scoring for the home team. An own goal by the fullback from Brooke House put Moulton College 2 nil up at half time. However, this was marred by the sending off of Peter Smith, the team captain for a 2nd yellow for dissent. As the second half got underway Moulton College continued to push forward and pepped the visiting goalkeeper with shot after shot. Despite playing the 45 minutes with 10 men, this did not hinder the team from increasing their half time lead to finish the game 4 - 0, with Tom Fitzjohn coming off the bench to score two superbly executed goals.
