Moulton faced their first Welsh opponents of the year in the final of the BCS knock out cup. The game was played at a wet and damp Cleve Rugby Club just outside Bristol. The game started with a good kick off and chase by Moulton and the early pressure was on the larger Ystrad team but their defence held firm and the early forays into the Ystrad half produced little in the way of points and only one chance at points from a penalty, but unfortunately this was missed by Ben Criddle. Ystrad started to try and use their size advantage with some determined ball carries but the technique of the Moulton defence held firm and turn over ball was won and with a lucky bounce of a kick Ben Nutley strode over for the first try of the game with Ben Crossland converting. Ystrad hit back quickly but unfortunately for Moulton the Ystrad try and conversion came from an intercept. Possesion was proving hard to maintain for both sides and the damp floor conditions were making the handling difficult but some strong scrummaging by Moulton kept the pressure on and credit must got to the front row for their efforts. The pressure started to tell as did the fitness and the gaps started to appear for Moulton but frustratingly these chances were not converted initially but the pressure was soon to create a try for Iain Simmons in his last game for the College this again was converted to allow Moulton to go into the half winning 14-7. A good kick off receipt by captain Ed Rhodes set the tone for the moment of the match when Moulton finally put some clever phases together and some good interplay between Ben Nutley and Olly Watson allowing Olly to score under the posts giving an easy conversion. This try proved crucial as the Moulton team started to relax and enjoy the final and although Ystrad did not give an inch you could see that the game had started to turn. Two tries by Jack Lines and substitute Wesley McGimpsey sealed the year's first piece of silverware in a deserved 35 -7 win for what has been a long and successful season for Moulton College rugby. However the season has one more final in store for the team with the Northamptonshire U18 schools cup final this Wednesday against Wrenn School from Wellingborough. Previous Sports Reports
