Playing conditions were perfect at Moulton College when the Football Academy was host to Boston. Moulton started well but ten minutes into the match Jordan May, Moutons' goalkeeper, injured his knee meaning that substitute goalkeeper Jake Molloy had to take over. The change seemed to unsettle Moulton allowing Boston to score easily from a mistake by the Moulton defence. The second half saw a reinvigorated Moulton with wave after wave of attacking football and for twenty five minutes Moulton peppered the Boston goal but to no avail. With resolute defending the opposing team held out and eventually took advantage of another mistake in Moulton's defence to go 2 - 0 up. With some twenty minutes of play remaining Jake Molloy, Moulton's substitute keeper, also injured his knee and was replaced by outfield player Adam Husbands. Moulton maintained persistent pressure until the end with Ryan Cherry and Lewis Legore going close to scoring. Despite losing two goalkeepers Moulton were not the weaker side and did not deserve to lose the match but it was apparent that two defensive mistakes and a lack of finishing cost them the game.
Moulton went into the local derby knowing that a win would send them top of the East Midlands League. The game started well with some neat play evident from both sides but it was Northampton College that created the early opportunities forcing a string of saves from the Moulton keeper. As the first half progressed, the teams played some impressive football but chances were few and far between. Both teams started the second half by attacking at every opportunity but it was Northampton College that managed to make a break and went ahead against the run of play. This only served to galvanise the Moulton side who spent the next 20 minutes probing the Northampton goal before an equaliser from Jo Minni and then a goal mouth scrabble in the dying seconds from Jacque Reid gave Moulton a 2-1 lead and a well deserved victory. Next week Moulton travel to second placed Derby looking to cement their place at the top of the table. BCS Ability Counts Football TournamentMoulton College - Tuesday 13th OctoberA seven-a-side football tournament was held on 13th October at the Moulton Holcot site. Three teams from Tresham Institute and two teams from Moulton College took part on a glorious autumn sunny day. In the opening match Moulton White took an early advantage over Moulton Blue with a hard fought 3-2 win, whilst Tresham A were putting together a 1-0 win over Tresham B. The Tresham teams were spirited and worked extremely hard but both Moulton teams were calculating in their approach and remained unbeaten in their next five games. The final match saw Moulton White play Moulton Blue in a hard fought game. The first strike went to the Whites but the Blues were determined and managed an equalizing goal. The Whites took the lead again but the Blues fought back bringing the score equal with a well taken goal. The final score, 2-2 honours even. On count back Moulton Whites, with only one defeat in the tournament, triumphed with team captain Elliot Goff holding aloft the victor's shield. Moulton College picked up their second win of the season with a 27 points win over Derby College. The victory came after two weeks of games being called off by opponents due to unavailability of playing courts and an inability to find referees. Although the winning margin of victory was comfortable it wasn't until the second half that Moulton were able to impose themselves on the game. The first two periods of play saw Derby cause the Moulton defence a lot of problems with their ability to beat defenders and convert easy scores. Moulton dominated long periods of play but their efforts were inconsistent and at half time the scores were tied at 43 all. However, the third quarter saw Moulton's pressure defence begin to have an effect forcing a number of Derby turn-overs and easy scores. Moulton took the period 28-17 to lead 71-60. All the signs were that the Derby ball handlers were about to crack in the final quarter which is exactly what happened. The final ten minutes of play saw Moulton outscore their opponents 32-16 to take the game 103-76. For Moulton, Matthew Usher scored 22 points with Jacob Holt and Darius Innis each scoring 13 points. Two other Moulton players, Luke Griffiths and Jordan Nembhard also scored in double figures. "First ever win for the 'B' team."British Colleges East Midlands Participation League
The Moulton College 'B' team achieved their first ever victory with a 19 points win over John Leggatt College, Scunthorpe. However the win for Coach Karen Goodrich's side came in unusual circumstances when Moulton's opponents declined to play the fourth and final quarter. The first quarter was taken by John Leggatt 14-9 mainly due to Moulton's inability to convert from the free throw line, in the first period they missed no less than ten free throws. Moulton won the second period 18-5 to take a 27-19 half time lead with their pressure defence causing Leggat a lot of problems. Moulton's offensive strategy was to drive into the opposition defence and this led to a number of fouls. Moulton were still guilty of missing a lot of free throws but they continued to dominate the contest and the third quarter ended with a successful long range effort from Liam Henry. Just as Coach Goodrich was to put five players out for the fourth quarter the John Leggatt coach decided enough was enough and took his team to the changing rooms. His reason for refusing to play the final ten minutes seemed to be based on the fact that he thought his team was getting called for too many fouls. The premature end to the game rather took the gloss off the Moulton win but it had been a true team effort with eleven of the twelve players scoring. "Moulton girls beaten by their perennial nemesis."British Colleges East Midlands League
It's now five years since the girls of Moulton College have beaten local rivals Bilborough College. The latest defeat came in a British Colleges league game last Wednesday when they went down by 8 points to the Nottingham based college. Moulton are still without two key players with knee injuries although Whitney Bain, who suffered a serious knee ligament injury nine months ago, was able to play a few minutes. The first two quarters were dour, low scoring affairs with Bilborough edging ahead at 18-15. In the third period Moulton tried to impose themselves with some aggressive defence but Bilborough who had a distinct height advantage increased their lead by five points to led 36-28 going into the final period of play. The Moulton girls gave absolutely everything in an attempt to reduce the deficit but the fourth quarter was tied at 15 all, Bilborough winning by 51 points to 43. For Moulton Katie Bayliss led the scoring with 20 points while Imogen Cox and Chloe Moss combined some great defensive work with 10 point hauls. GolfEast Midlands College Golf Championship 2009/10Players from Moulton's new Golf Academy took part in their first competition (8/10/09) in the East Midlands College Golf Championship 2009/10. They were up against some of the more established golf colleges in the region but put up a very creditable performance finishing joint 14th with Loughborough out of 20 in the team event with a net score of 150 compared to Chesterfield's 141 to win the event. From a field of 54, Moulton's Daniel Ashcroft had an excellent top 10 finish on the male leader board with a score of 76 behind Derby College's winner Richard Larimore's 73, but narrowly missed out on qualifying for the National Championships. However, Moulton did receive some glory with Matthew Casey winning the longest drive of the day competition on the 13th hole. RugbyMen's Rugby Academy
Moulton College started this year as they finished last with a tight and competitive win at the Pitsford pitch on 30th September and despite the date, the pitch and the weather had more in common with a summer fixture. Moulton failed to deal with the PHGS kick off allowing the ball to bounce into touch. From this first lineout Moulton started to exert some good territorial advantage against a committed and determined PHGS defence. Ben Criddle at 10 showed good tactical knowledge using the wind and placing the Moulton pack on the front foot. Concerns about being a little underprepared were soon laid to rest as Rob Laird picked up a loose ball from some good counter rucking and raced down the touch line to score the opening try. Again Moulton did not deal well with the PGHS kick off and were under pressure for the first time in the match. However the physicality and organisation of the defence was sound and both Sam Collins and Mike Haywood made some good offensive tackles. With the set piece functioning well Moulton worked up the field applying pressure and save for a few errors caused by some good PGHS defence, the team deserved to be ahead. It took a well taken try by Karl Smith powering through tacklers to gain some points from the pressure being exerted allowing Moulton to go in at half time 10 - 0 up. The second half was a much more fractured affair with PGHS coming back strongly and talking advantage of the breeze at their backs. The defence and commitment shown by the Moulton team was excellent especially given the time that the team had to 'gel' before this important game. Some good work was done on the floor by the back row, led by Captain Ollie Watson, allowing Moulton to clear their lines on turn over ball. The third try proved hard to come by and it took some good build up play and pressure to provide an opportunist try for Josh Peters. All thoughts of PGHS crumbling were soon dispelled as they surged forward with renewed vigour. Again the Moulton defence was called into question and again they answered with some strong tackling however this was not enough to stop PGHS scoring their only points of the game with a well taken penalty. The game was a very competitive fixture and played very physically with Moulton eventually winning 15-3. FootballMen's Football
A shocking first 45 minutes saw Moulton College fall behind to some good interplay from the home team. Moulton were facing their first defeat by missing a penalty and conceding 2 soft goals. However, following a motivational team talk by coach Marcus Ebdon, the second half saw the academy step up a gear and produce a fabulous team performance. Despite missing a further penalty, two goals from Mark Prior and one from Todd Jenner, Moulton College Academy came out winners to maintain their 100% start to the season in the league.
The College began their season with an entertaining draw. The inexperienced team containing 7 debutants from this year's intake, made this first match particularly challenging. Within the first 5minutes it became clear that this was a new side as Stephenson took an early 2 goal lead. However, Moulton began to find their feet as the half progressed and pulled back the deficit with goals from Ashley Ferguson and Courtney Douglas. Stephenson edged ahead shortly before half time and doubled their advantage at the beginning of the second half. Moulton responded with a flurry of chances before a well taken goal from Sam Gyasi and a late strike from Malachi Noble drew Moulton level in time for the final whistle. Moulton began their 2009 / 2010 campaign with a comfortable 26 points win over local rivals Bedford College event though Moulton had nine first year students in their line up and had only practiced together on two occasions. Moulton caused their opponents many problems with their aggressive defence and up-tempo offence. Despite lacking the organisation usually associated with Moulton teams their defensive effort forced a number of turn-overs resulting in easy scores. Coach Mark Dunning was pleased with his team's effort which saw eleven of his twelve players scoring although he was less happy with the fact that is team gave the ball away on 40 occasions. Merson Paul led all scorers with 19 points and he received good support from Darius Inniss with 10 points. British Colleges Girl's League
A Moulton team reduced to just six players because of serious knee injuries to three Academy students had an easy win over an inexperienced Warwickshire College team. Such was Moulton's domination that they actually stopped their opponents scoring in three of the four playing periods. British Colleges Participation League
The Moulton College 'B' team made the long journey to Grimsby for their first fixture of the new season and put up an excellent performance despite eventually losing by three points. Moulton trailed 17-11 after the first quarter but thanks to the efforts of Craig Hampton and Liam Henry turned in an excellent performance in the second period which they won 16-8 to take a 27-25 half time lead. Grimsby made a big push in the third quarter but some excellent work from Chris Bryan kept Moulton in touch and the period was tied 11 all. Moulton extended their lead to five points early in the fourth quarter but then complacency set in and Grimsby went on a 10-2 charge and they soon extended their lead to 10 points at 50-40. Coach Karen Goodrich took a time out and assured her charges that they could get back into the game. Chris Knight responded with two long range shots and when Bryan converted from an out of bounds play the gap was down to just three points. A Grimsby attack was repelled giving Moulton the opportunity to tie the game but a three-point attempt hit the ring and fell short. The Moulton players were disappointed to have lost the game but Coach Goodrich was full of praise for their efforts and attitude. HockeyMale Hockey - BCS Hockey East Midlands League
Goal scorers: Grant Cherry, Danny Whitfield Moulton had a disappointing start to their East Midland league campaign, with a draw against their Leicestershire rivals Queen Elizabeth & Wygeston College. Despite dominating the first half, Moulton could only convert one of their opportunities with Grant Cherry slotting the ball home under pressure. First year students Joe Baillie, Lewis Ward, Liam Cassidy and Sam Baker had promising performances. Luke Oakley, in the Moulton goal, was rarely called upon due to resolute defending from second year Danny Whitfield. Whitfield put Moulton into a 2-0 lead in the second half with a well worked penalty. However, the squad began to tire in the latter stages of the game and QE took advantage of this, scoring two goals in the last 15 minutes. Moulton had the opportunity to score the winner in the last play of the game through a penalty corner but captain Laurence Mead was just off target. Moulton's next fixture is 14th October, away to John Leggot College in Scunthorpe where the girls will make their BCS league debut and the boys will look to improve from today's performance.
