Moulton College's debut performance in the Northamptonshire Round of the England Hockey National Schools Cup ended with a 2-2 draw. It should be noted that NSB had 7 Under 18 county players in their side while Moulton only had 7 of their regular team who were eligible to play. The game started at a fast pace and it was Moulton who opened the scoring when Liam Cassidy scored from open play. NSB soon responded and equalised through a break way goal. Lewis Cassidy, Sam Baker and Jon Holland had an exceptional game in defence and worked tirelessly with Cassidy in midfield. The second half continued with the fast pace but the commitment of the Moulton boys prevented NSB from getting into their stride. This was not a game without controversy with 2 yellow cards issued and NSB having a goal disallowed. NSB then converted a penalty corner with just 15 mins remaining but despite being down to 10 players for the majority of the half, Moulton persevered and a quick taken free hit from Cassidy saw Joe Cochrane on his debut performance, lift the ball over the keeper to equalise. The remaining few minutes were frantic and some good defensive play from Harry Peart lead to the game finishing two a piece. Good debut performances from Rob Elliot, Joe Cochrane, Adam Smith and Antonio Aguilar-Rohan. Both Moulton and NSB need to play Campion School and then the top two teams will go on to represent Northamptonshire in the Midlands round of the National Championship. Squad: Luke Oakley, Lewis Ward, Liam Cassidy, Sam Baker, Joe Baillie, Harry Peart, Jon Holland, Ben Stewart, Matthew Carvell, Rob Elliot, Joe Cochrane, Adam Smith, Antonio Aguilar-Rohan FootballMen's Football Academy - 18/11/09
Moulton made the long trip to Worksop and North Notts College hoping for a change of fortune after losing their last two matches. The two and a half hour journey plus the ninety minutes play in howling wind and rain was made less painful with a resounding 6 - 0 victory. Moulton took a very early lead with a goal in the first two minutes from James Lorimer with a well directed side-foot volley following a great cross from Kier Lawrie. From then on goals and chances came thick and fast for Moulton as North Notts tried in vain to defend. Moulton's second came from another superb pass from Lawrie creating a similar chance to the first but this time scored by Elliot Whitehouse. Tom Fitzjohn gained Moulton's third following an individual run, dribbling through the North Notts defence before beating the keeper. The game looked all but over for the home team by the end of the first half and the second forty-five minutes saw Moulton continue their onslaught with Mark Prior scoring a magnificent goal - his first of three. Kier Lawrie proved his value to the Moulton side by setting up Mark Prior's second, the fifth of the day. The sixth and final goal came with only three minutes left on the clock, when Mark Prior completed his hat-trick with a simple tap in. A well deserved three points were gained for Moulton College.
Moulton went to Northampton College Daventry sitting top of the league and without a defeat this season. Although having taken a 4 week break, Moulton started brightly with some good play down the right hand side. Moulton continued to press the opposition squandering some glorious opportunities before Sam Gyasi scored after 30 minutes to give Moulton the lead. The second half was a different story, Moulton were slow to start and Northants Daventry equalised following a mistake from the Moulton goalkeeper. The home side pressed on forcing another error to take a 2-1 lead. Moulton's fighting spirit showed itself in the final 20 minutes but to no avail. Women's Football - 18/11/09Moulton Girls too much for Boston!
On a blustery day in the East Midlands, Boston College were hoping to pick up their second win of the season whilst Moulton were hoping to be challenging Bilborough for top spot in the BCS East Midlands Women's Premier League. Kicking into the strong winds Moulton began in decisive fashion pinning the Boston girls in their own half with some good play. Within the first 10 minutes Moulton had tested the Boston keeper with several long range efforts. This set the pattern of play for the half as Moulton attacked the beleaguered Boston goal. Through a combination of luck, good goalkeeping and wayward finishing Moulton incredibly remained goal-less. The referee waived away two penalty claims for handball by the Boston defence. Eventually, Moulton's continued pressure counted when a strong cross from Sarah Judge again struck a Boston hand but this time the unconvinced referee was helped out by the linesman and Jess Law buried the ensuing penalty. A couple of minutes later Law reacted quickly to strike a firm shot home in the box to send Moulton into the break leading 2-0. The late goals demoralised Boston. Moulton rapidly made it 4-0 through goals from Jenna-Marie Looker and a Law hat-trick before a 30 yard screamer from Sammy Jo Pebody and Sarah Judge scored to make it 6-0. Inevitably Jess Law got in on the act again to make it 7-0 with her fourth of the day. However, Moulton were not quite finished - Kayla May Hennessey scored through an excellent shot from distance and a fantastic solo effort from Laura Whittle sealed the points with an emphatic 9-0 victory. Basketball"Excellent triple for Moulton College." - 18/11/09British College's Men's Elite LeagueAll three Moulton College's teams were in action last Wednesday and all three came up with comfortable and convincing wins.
The Moulton College Elite Men's team made the short journey to Bedford College without five key players and recorded a comfortable win without ever being at their best. By half time Moulton had built up a 45-28 lead but in the third quarter were guilty of some sloppy play which allowed their opponents to take the period by 19 points to 13. Coach Mark Dunning's advice before the fourth quarter had little effect with Moulton only edging the period 21-20 to take the game 82-67. In the 15 point win JonnyYates top scored with 23 points with Jordan Nembhard, Matt Usher and Merson Paul contributing 16, 15 and 12 points respectively. British Colleges Men's Participation League
After their nail biting win against Wygeston & Queen Elizabeth College the previous week the Moulton College 'B' team were expecting a tough game against Chesterfield College. In fact they ran out comfortable winners by over 70 points. From the outset Chesterfield were rocked by Moulton's pressured man to man defence which kept their opponents scoreless for fully eight minutes. By the end of the first quarter Moulton were leading 32-5 and this lead was extended to 64-12 by half time. During the third and fourth quarters Coach Karen Goodrich imposed a number of conditions on her team but they continued to dominate with all twelve players getting on the score sheet. For Moulton Dan Obasa led the scoring with 19 points, Chris Bryant contributed 18 points and Chris Knight 13 while Craig Hampton combined an aggressive defensive play with a 12 points haul. British Colleges Women's League
An excellent all-round team performance spearheaded by Katie Bayliss saw an under strength Moulton team to an easy win against a much improved Warwickshire College team. The first period was a dour, low scoring affair with Warwickshire employing a containing zone defence. Moulton took the quarter 12-7 but when they raised the intensity of their defence they were able to steal the ball and get their running game going. By half time Moulton had opened up a 36-17 lead with newcomer Christina Wise looking prominent at both ends of the court. Moulton continued to dominate in the second half with Summer Copeland making a number of key interceptions and Laura Henderson playing solidly. In the 41 points win Bayliss was the 'star of the show' with a 32 point haul. Basketball"Rowe barrage takes Moulton 'B' to victory."British Colleges Men's Participation League - 11/11/09
With just three minutes remaining of this BCS Participation League game, Wygeston & Queen Elizabeth held a nine point advantage over the Moulton 'B' team. The home side had almost started their celebrations but the Moulton players and Cameron Rowe in particular, had different ideas. Rowe proceeded to connect with two three point shots and when Craig Hampton also scored a three-pointer, Moulton were right back in the game at 55-52. The Wygeston coach took a time out but the home side had lost their impetus and turned the ball over. In their next offence Rowe again received the ball on the perimeter and the Wygeston defence rushed out to close down his shot. The Moulton forward coolly faked to shoot then drove all the way to basket for a lay up that took his team to within one point of their opponents. After another Wygeston attack had been repelled, Chris Knight scored with a put back that gave Moulton their first lead of the game. Dan Obasa added insult to injury by making a steal and scoring right on the buzzer. In those chaotic three minutes Moulton had outscored their opponents 12-zero to claim an unlikely win. An athletic and aggressive Wygeston had dominated the opening stages of the game and jumped out to a 19-11 lead after the first quarter. The pattern continued at the start of the second period with most of Moulton's scoring threat coming from Dan Obasa. Coach Karen Goodrich switched her team to a trapping zone defence and this had the immediate effect of preventing the Wygeston players driving to basket. It also allowed the Moulton big men Liam Hebblethwaite, Chris Knight and Martin Stroud to secure rebounds. At half time Moulton trailed by just four points at 45-41 but at the start of the fourth period of play Moulton were guilty of rushing their offence and turning the ball over unnecessarily. Wygeston outscored them 10-3 to take a 55-46 lead but the re-introduction of Jamaine Browne to the Moulton line up brought more composure and set up the remarkable comeback. In the three point win Obasa top scored with 13 points, Rowe contributed 12 points a total matched by Hampton while Knight had eight blocked shots to go with his hatful of rebounds. Coach Goodrich was delighted with the way her team had kept their composure in difficult circumstances and was quick to highlight the contributions of all twelve of her players. Having beaten Derby College twice last season Moulton could have expected a guaranteed three points but that was not the case. Two defensive mistakes both coming from corner kicks cost Moulton dearly, suffering a 2-0 defeat against a strong Derby side. The first mistake came from the Moulton goalkeeper who went to punch away a corner and inadvertently diverted it into his own net. The second goal occurred when Adam Husbands gifted a free header to make it 2-0. Moulton's keeper, Jordon May, made amends for his mistake with a string of fine saves in the second half. The home side ploughed forward after the break but could not break down a resilient Derby defence. HockeyBCS East Midlands Hockey League - 10/11/09
Moulton girls had an emphatic win over Bilborough College girls at Moulton to go top of the table in the BCS East Midlands League. Captain Laura Whittle opened the scoring with her first of six goals and a well placed penalty corner strike from Mollie Gardner saw Moulton edge into the lead within the first ten minutes. Despite some good saves from the Bilborough goalkeeper, Whittle had scored a hat trick by half time. The second half saw Moulton continuing to pressurise the Bilborough defence with Lottie Allnatt and Gemma White making some impressive attacking runs down the wing, where Gardner was well placed to score another two goals and White's continued hard work paid off when she scored a well deserved goal. Whittle also scored a second half hat trick and though Bilborough did threaten the Moulton goal towards the end of the game, keeper Alex Holmes made two comfortable saves to keep a clean sheet. Emily Broughton scored her 1st goal of the season in the final few minutes of the game as a change in formation saw Amy Wykes have an impressive spell at right half. It was a good, positive performance that will give the girls confidence for their next match in the BCS Cup where they play away to Long Road College in Cambridge. Laurence Mead, Alex Blunt, Lewis Ward, Liam Cassidy, Luke Oakley, Laura Whittle, Gemma White, Mollie Gardner, Lottie Allnatt, Jess Lovell. RugbyBCS Rugby League - 10/11/09
Moulton College travelled up to Chesterfield College for the re-arranged BCS league fixture. It was unusual to travel to a fixture having no knowledge of the opponents but skipper Jack Campbell made sure the team were mentally prepared for the game by upping the tempo and intensity in the warm up. It soon became apparent that despite a spirited start from the Chesterfield team Moulton were not in the mood to compromise. It was not long until the first try came after some powerful close in running from the forwards allowed Luke Murphy over the line. Further well worked team tries quickly followed showing some good interplay between backs and forwards. Joseph Daniel kicked exceptionally well and converted all the tries bar one in the first half allowing Moulton to go into the half with a comfortable 47-0 lead. Any thoughts that Moulton College would relax in the second half were soon dispelled as again some good interplay and strong running proved too much for Chesterfield. The Chesterfield team showed great spirit and did not give up throughout the game but Moulton stuck to their task scoring a further 55 unanswered points winning the game 102-0. Whilst all the players performed well Sam Ismail's hatrick and Ryan Spriggs strong running deserve a special mention. RugbyRFU Elite U18 League 4th Round - 2/11/2009
Moulton College hosted Worcester 6th Form at the Pitsford pitch in the 4th round of the RFU Elite U18 league. With Moulton currently snapping at the heels of Hartpury in the league it was an important to keep up the pressure. The opening quarter was a cagey and nervous but Moulton College settled and started to dominate territory and apply pressure. Unfortunately some uncharacteristic penalty misses by the usually reliable Ben Criddle meant that this was not converted into points. However, when the Moulton College team remained patient and stuck to the task in hand they were rewarded with Dan Brotherton scoring from a pick and go at the breakdown. This was converted successfully by Ben Criddle. This seemed to ignite the team and despite not reacting well at the kick off some good play allowed Jack Lines to break free and score the first of his 4 tries of the afternoon. Worcester were competing strongly at the breakdown frustrating the Moulton College team as they were exploiting the Worcester defence well when a quick ball was achieved. Skipper Tom Holliday called for patience and accuracy and the team reacted well and delivered exactly what was needed allowing Jack Lines to finish some good interplay. Moulton College went into the 2nd half 29-0 and full of confidence. However it was Worcester that started much the better team with an aggressive blitz defence causing the Moulton College backs problem. In attack Worcester had picked up their game with some determined carries allowing the visiting backs some quick balls to exploit and scoring a well worked converted try. Moulton were still in the driving seat but started to try and play out of their 22 when perhaps a pressure relieving kick was in order. This lack of composure was demonstrated when Mike Haywood's pass was intercepted allowing a Worcester player a free run in. Substitutes made an impact to the Moulton College side renewing the effort levels and this was rewarded with Dan Brotherton's second try and Jack Lines 4th closed out the game with Moulton College winning 43-12 gaining a winning bonus point in the league. BasketballBritish Colleges Elite Men's League - 4/11/2009"Late flurry fails to save Moulton's unbeaten record."
Moulton College lost their unbeaten British College's record when they went down by two points to local rivals Milton Keynes. The loss came despite a tremendous effort from the Moulton players in the final two minutes of the game when they outscored their opponents by 12 points to two. Regrettably this came immediately after they had themselves been outscored 15 - 3 in the middle of the final period of play. Until the last quarter the game had been a close run thing with both teams enjoying periods of superiority. Milton Keynes were well organised but relied on the penetrative play of their guard, Connor Washington. Moulton, on the other hand, relied on a much freer style looking for up-tempo play and aggressive defence. Moulton's performance was probably better than in some of the games they have won despite the final result, although they will reflect on the fact that they missed no less than 12 lay ups. Coach Mark Dunning was pleased with the way his players used their zone offence to force a number of turn-overs in the latter stages of the game. In the two points defeat Matt Usher top scored with 20 points but disappointingly saw little of the ball in the last quarter. Jonny Yates scored 14 points and other useful contributions came from Darius Innis and Merson Paul who scored 12 and 11 points respectively. Previous Sports Reports
