Moulton College travelled to Myerscough College in the RFU Elite U18 league ready for a tough, physical encounter with a good Myerscough side. The conditions were wet and windy but the pitch surface was very good especially as it had been newly laid. Moulton started by playing into the wind and it was soon obvious that Myerscough were intent on gaining the territory through their kicking game. The back three for Moulton (Charlie Sadler, Karl Smith and Rhys Evans) were tested throughout the game and came through with flying colours. Despite Myerscough playing a territorial game it was Moulton who managed to score first with some intelligent counter attacking and kicking leading to a line-out 5m from the Myerscough line. The line out was driven over with Grant Snelling benefitting from the hard work; unfortunately Ben Criddle missed what was a difficult conversion. Myerscough continued to exert pressure but Moulton's line out defence was solid and the Myerscough pack were kept at bay. When Myerscough earned a penalty, Moulton struck back quickly with some good phase play and quick recycling leading to hooker Mike Haywood scoring Moulton's second try resulting in Moulton going into the second half 10-3. The second half was a disjointed affair with some serious injuries breaking up the game and a couple of yellow cards unsettling both teams. Defence for both teams started to dominate and the game settled into a series of penalties with both Moulton and Myerscough converting a penalty. The performance may not have been what the team were hoping for but the work rate and the final result was excellent with Moulton running out 13-6 winners. BCS League - 27/01/2010
Another cold and windy Wednesday saw Moulton College facing Colchester in a last minute friendly fixture. Both teams were eager to get the game started after the long cold spell lay off. The kick off was received by Moulton who immediately gathered the ball and unleashed the big 'bosh' from Vijay Tara who carried the ball with his usual steam train noises. This set the tone for the early part of the game with Moulton getting the better of the early exchanges and the first points went to the home side. Despite some occasionally 'sloppy' pay by Moulton the points started to flow their way giving them a lead of 36-0 at half time. The Moulton team were guilty of thinking that the game was won but as they say 'it is a game of two halves' and Colchester came back very strongly in the second half helped by careless handling by the Moulton team. Luckily for Moulton the hard work they put in during the first half paid dividends as Colchester won the second half 12-7. The match was played with good spirit and intensity, if a little frantic at times and ended 42-12. For Moulton this was a good result after the recent lack of game time and although the team was slightly disappointed with the performance the result was positive. Captain Jack Campbell said after the game “another Wednesday, another win and we keep rolling on”. HockeyBCS National Cup - East Finals 27/01/10
Jemma White (3), Mollie Gardner, Jess Lovell, Jo Livesay Moulton College are through the semi finals of the BCS National Knock-out Cup after an impressive team performance against former champions Hills Road College (Cambridge), winning the East round of the competition. The game started as an even midfield battle, with neither team looking to break the deadlock until Jemma White opened her account. An excellent solo run saw her strike past the goalkeeper and then scored her second from a Jess Lovell pass. As Hills Road pressed for an equaliser, Alex Holmes made some outstanding saves in goal and Moulton's defence kept their composure. The second half saw a frantic pace with Moulton more than aware that Hills Road were desperate to get back into the game. However, it was Moulton who took the advantage and, after a series of penalty corners, Jo Livesay scored her first goal for Moulton. Emily Broughton was unlucky not to score as a reward for her tireless running throughout the game. Hills Road fought back and 6 goals were scored in the last 15 mins of the game with Hills Road scoring from open play but White's speed gave her a hat-trick and Moulton took a three goal lead. Hills Road continued to attack and scored following a penalty corner but this time it was Moulton's Mollie Gardner who retaliated with a superb strike in open play. As legs began to tire, Hills Road continued to press for goals and succeeded from open play, making the score 3 - 5 but it was a fantastic piece of team work that lead to Moulton's 6th and final goal with some skilful play by Lottie Allnatt and Hannah Bullimore that lead to Lovell scoring a well deserved goal. A really good team effort and a thoroughly deserved win with a squad who are growing in confidence and constantly improving. The Girls now wait to find out who they will play in the semi final of the competition when the winners of the North, South and West are decided. Squad: ALEX HOLMES, JESS LOVELL, MOLLIE GARDNER, LAURA WHITTLE (c), LOTTIE ALNATT, BECKY HARGIN, JEMMA WHITE, HANNAH BULLIMORE, ELLEN JOHNSON, JO LIVESAY,AMY WYKES, LUCY QUIRKE, EMILY BROUGHTON. BCS East Midlands League - 27/01/10
Joe Baillie (3), Alex Blunt, Courtney Horner A hat trick for Joe Baillie and one each for Alex Blunt and Courtney Horner saw Moulton College Men's team retain their second place in the BCS East Midlands League in a 5 - 3 victory over South Notts College. The game started well for Moulton with a mistake from a South Notts defender turning the ball into his own net. As Baillie was the last Moulton player to touch the ball in the D, he was awarded the goal. However, conceding an 'own' goal motivated South Notts and they began to dominate the game. Despite some strong defensive play from Moulton, South Notts equalised. Moulton absorbed the pressure with some good saves from goalie Luke Oakley and defensive play from Sam Baker, but South Notts scored their second and Moulton went into half time trailing 2-1. Following a half time talk by new lecturer, Brett Holland, Moulton started the second half in a more determined frame of mind and from the outset were pushing for an equaliser which came with Alex Blunt scoring from a penalty corner. Moulton started to move the ball around playing some good hockey and Joe Baillie calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to score his second and Moulton's third. The fourth goal came from a well worked move following Danny Whitfield's interception in Moulton's own half which lead to Courtney Horner scoring his first goal for the College. South Notts came close to making up the deficit on five occasions but a combination of poor accuracy and good defending enabled Moulton to keep a clean sheet for the second half. In the final minutes of the game, Moulton sealed the victory with an impressive strike in the top of the goal from Baillie. A good team performance that showed a lot of future potential. Moulton will host Bilborough College in the league on Wednesday 3rd February 2010. SQUAD: LUKE OAKLEY, DANNY WHITFIELD (c), ALEX BLUNT, LIAM CASSIDY, JOE BAILLIE, SAM BAKER, LEWIS WARD, HARRY PEART, BEN STEWART, JON HOLLAND, ADAM SMITH, NAISAN DEHGHANI, COURTNEY HORNER BasketballMoulton see off NSB......justNorthamptonshire County Championship Pool game - 27/01/10
The Moulton College men's 'A' team recorded an important win over local rivals NSB and are now favourites to win the county championship. The win came not without a number of scares for the Moulton team with NSB taking a 13 point lead midway through the second quarter then staging a spirited comeback late in the game. Moulton knew they faced a difficult game as NSB are recognised as one the leading basketball schools in the country. This was the first time the two teams had met, the match coming about due to the re-organisation of the colleges and schools competitions. NSB started the better of the two teams with James Rutter controlling the back court and Dan McNab shooting well they led 22-16 after the first quarter. Moulton were not playing a good offensive game and were guilty of missing a number of simple scoring opportunities. Things were no better for Moulton at the start of the second period with NSB outscoring the home team 8-1 to take a 13 point lead and were leading by nine points at 38-29 at half time. Following a few stern words, Moulton looked a much sharper team at the start of the third and a 14-4 scoring charge gave them the lead for the first time in the game. The Moulton dominance continued throughout the quarter which they took 33-12 to lead 62-50 going into the final ten minutes of play. The Moulton lead was extended to 17 points at 77-60 with four minutes of the game remaining but then they were guilty of some careless play which gifted NSB possession. To their credit NSB seized the opportunity and in those four minutes outscored Moulton 15-5 and give the Moulton students a very nervous few minutes. In the seven points win, Jacob Holt scored 20 points and hauled down 18 rebounds to record an impressive double. Luke Griffiths scored 18 points; Ben Budgen enjoyed his best game for the college with 14 points while Merson Paul and Jonny Yates contributed 11 and 10 points respectively. For NSB James Rutter scored 26 points and was the class act of the game while Dewayne Browne scored 15 points and Dan McNab 12. NSB have already beaten Corby Business Academy and Northampton Academy so the destiny of the championship rests in Moulton's hands but they will need to be at their very best in their two remaining games. Men's Football AcademyFriendly - 27/01/10
With no league fixture Moulton arranged a last minute friendly against local rivals Tresham Institute. Moulton fielded nine rookie first year students in the starting eleven. Even with a good start, the home side went behind twice in the first half due to very poor defending but pulled themselves back into the game with two wonderful goals from the impressive Kier Lawrie. After the break Moulton took complete control of the game scoring another four goals but it could easily have been seven or eight. Two goals from Ryan Cherry and a goal a piece from Michael Ramsdale and Elliot Whitehouse finished off an outstanding performance from the home side. Men's Football 2nd XIBCS League - 27/01/10
An outstanding team performance and two fine individual performances from Connor Clyne and Malachi Noble ensured an emphatic win for Moulton College in this local derby clash. The game started with a bang as Jacques Reid fired Moulton ahead in the early minutes finishing off a commanding passage of play and, before ten minutes had passed, Courtney Douglas and Connor Clyne made it three nil. Moulton continued to dominate the first half playing possession football in the opposition half, making their dominance pay as Captain Joe Merril added a fourth with a stunning free kick and Clyne completed his brace before half time. The second half saw a continuation of the first with two more goals being added by forward Sam Gyasi and an unfortunate Northampton College own goal giving the visitors an 8-0 advantage. As the game drew to a close Moulton relented and Northampton College scored a free kick in the final minutes. A good performance from Moulton College as the season nears its climax. Girl's FootballBCS Regional Cup 3rd round - 27/01/10
Moulton College girl's football team were once again drawn against their arch rivals, Bilborough College in the 3rd round of the British Colleges Regional Cup Competition and the match lived up to expectation. Both sides played a cagey, tight game for the first ten minutes keen not to give too much away to the opposition. Bilborough pressed forward forcing 4 corners in succession and causing Moulton College to adopt a defensive formation. However, Moulton's perseverance finally paid off and Sammy Jo Pebody swung in a beautiful right footed cross which was heading for the top corner but was flicked over the crossbar by April Malin. Moulton continued to gain confidence and pressed forward with Jess Law striking a sweet shot to the left of goal forcing the keeper to parry the ball onto the crossbar. Against the run of play Bilborough broke forward scoring a fine goal from their centre forward. An injury to keeper Shana Haynes meant a change between the stick with Jess Law pulling on the goalie gloves. The score remained 1 - 0 to the opposition at half time. The second half saw Moulton making much better use of the pitch width and the girl's began to test the opposition keeper. Another injury to Kayla May Hennesey forced Moulton into a further change, with Orella Roache coming on at leftback and Katie Hay moving into midfield. The forced change seemed to confuse Bilborough and Katie Hay almost scored with her first run through midfield forcing the keeper to pull off a finger tip save. As Moulton pressed forward a speculative shot from Sarah Judge found its way into the top right hand corner to level the score at 1 -1. The game went into extra time and Moulton could sense that the opposition were starting to wane and a tentative shot from Sammy Jo Pebody was flicked past the keeper by a Bilborough player to put Moulton 2 -1 up with 5 minutes to go. As the final whistle beckoned, Bilborough were awarded a late penalty which was superbly saved by Jess Law who proved to be the player of the game with some outstanding saves to safely see Moulton College through to the 4th round where they will play Cambridge Regional College. NetballBCS League - 27/01/10
After numerous rearranged fixtures due to the weather the first game saw a determined performance from Moulton College. Having suffered previous defeats against Wyggeston, the girls had a difficult first quarter. Some strong defence from Steph Turner and excellent movement from Beth Stacey helped to keep their game together. As the game progressed Moulton found their feet and took control of the game and the final quarter saw excellent team spirit from the girls. Some solid shooting from Amy-Jayne Everitt and Chloe Braham helped to considerably narrow the final score. A good first performance of the term. RugbyMen's Rugby Academy - 20/01/2010
The RFU Elite U18 league saw a 'top of the table clash' between Moulton College and Hartpury College. The preparation for game for both teams had been far from ideal with the cold, snowy weather and the festive break interfering with training. Despite some good early attacks from Hartpury it was Moulton who managed to get on the score sheet first. Some strong defence produced a turn over ball allowing Sam Collins to place a good, tactical kick into space for Karl Smith to chase. The bounce was favourable and Karl raced away to score in the corner. A difficult conversion was narrowly missed by Ben Criddle. After Hartpury kicked off they were immediately back under pressure with some excellent restart work from Tom Nutley. Moulton showed patience in adjusting to the style of refereeing and, despite some confusion with lineout penalties, the discipline and work was repaid as Sam Collins scored under the posts allowing an easy conversion for Ben Criddle. Hartpury started to apply pressure but the Moulton defence held firm. The Moulton pack managed to hold out against several well organised driving mauls from the Hartpury 8. Some good tactical kicking from Ross Kevan allowed the pressure to be relieved and Moulton started to build the phases and ended up on the Hartpury 5m line. The Hartpury defence held firm despite repeated attempts and it took a good darting run from Ross Kevan to allow Ben Criddle to crash over after picking a good line. Ben converted his own try to take Moulton into the second half with a 19-0 lead. The second half saw no let up in the penalty count but allowed Hartpury their first points of the game with a well taken penalty. This was almost immediately cancelled out with a penalty kick from Ben Criddle. The penalties kept coming and it was not long until Ben Criddle had another successful penalty attempt. This spurred the Hartpury team on and a period of constant pressure resulted in a maul being driven over for Hartpury's first try. Then, with a lucky break for Moulton, the ball bounced off the upright off a penalty attempt allowing Tom Nutley to gather and drop over the line for the bonus point try. Hartpury struck back with another close quarter try that, this time, was converted. The game ended with Moulton winning 32-13. A good, hard fought win making the league table very tight at the top. BasketballBCS Cup Round 3 (Women) - 20/01/2010
Jessica Lovell, Mollie Gardner, Laura Whittle, Jemma White The Moulton women are through to the regional final of the BCS cup after beating John Leggett College their main rivals in the East Midlands. Initially the pace was a little sedate as both teams had not played for some time due to the bad weather but it was Moulton who go the better start putting the John Leggett defence under pressure. Jessica Lovell had a goal disallowed in the few minutes of the game, but this did not deter Moulton who continued to attack and went into the lead 1 - 0 just before half time when Laura Whittle converted a penalty corner. However, it was John Leggett who started better in the second half. Some defensive errors from a tired Moulton team saw John Leggett score two goals past an otherwise impressive Alex Holmes. This seemed to give Moulton the incentive they needed to improve their performance, Lottie Allnatt and Jemma White worked extremely hard to deliver the ball into the danger zone. Emily Broughton and Hannah Bullimore were unlucky not to convert their opportunities but Mollie Gardner showed some excellent ball control as she scored from an acute angle. Lovell then took Moulton into the lead when her solo effort was deflected into the net. Moulton were under real pressure in the final few minutes as John Leggett were searching for that elusive equaliser, but a well worked move from Moulton saw Jemma White score their fourth goal with just two minutes left on the clock. The girls now wait to find out who they will play away in the next round; this is between Hills Road 6th Form College, Cambridge and SEEVIC, Essex. Team: Alex Holmes (GK), Jess Lovell, Mollie Gardner, Laura Whittle (c), Lottie Allnatt, Becca Hargin, Ellen Johnson, Jemma White, Hannah Bullimore, Naomi Wootton, Emily Broughton, Lucy Quirke. BCS Cup Round 3 (Men) - 20/01/2010
Lewis Ward Despite a brave performance from Moulton Men, they were knocked out of the BCS cup by an impressive Birmingham side who had won their previous round 13 - 1. The visitors took an early lead with a well worked goal and Moulton felt much of the pressure for the opening few minutes. Moulton's undoubted player of the match, goalie Luke Oakley, made some outstanding acrobatic saves and was supported well by defenders Danny Whitfield, Lewis Ward and Jon Holland. Moulton remained resilient and their patience paid off when Lewis Ward's solo effort lead to the equaliser. However, a well worked penalty corner move saw Moulton go into half time trailing 2-1. The second half, was very much centred around the midfield with neither team unable to break the other's defences but as Moulton legs began to tire, Birmingham scored their third. As in all cup games, Moulton pushed everything forward to find the goal to get back into the cup tie, but were caught on the break and despite heroic efforts by Oakley, Birmingham converted their chances. A commendable performance by Moulton with undoubted effort and commitment. With the cup and regional tournament out of the way, they now have the opportunity to concentrate on their league performance, where they are currently in second place. Team: Luke Oakley (GK), Jon Holland, Danny Whitfied (c), Lewis Ward, Joe Baillie, Sam Baker, Courtney Horner, Adam Smith, Liam Cassidy, Alex Blunt, Harry Peart, Naisan Dehghani, Ben Stewart. FootballBCS National Cup - 20/01/2010
Moulton won through to the next round of the BCS National Cup with a hard-earned win away to Boston College after extra-time and penalties. After a fairly even start Boston's main striker took advantage of a square Moulton back four to slip through the offside trap and round the goalkeeper and roll the ball into an empty net with a cool piece of finishing after 20 minutes. Moulton fought hard to get back into the match and were level five minutes before the break when an Ashley Eeles cross was met with a thumping header from Michael Ramsdale that left the keeper no chance. In the second half Moulton got the upper hand but could not get the winner which forced the match into extra-time. Moulton's superior fitness levels showed through with several opponents going down with cramp but somehow Boston hung on to force the game to a penalty shoot out lottery. Happily justice was served as Moulton ran out 4-3 on the penalty count to send them into the next round. BasketballImpressive Moulton see off WorcesterBritish Colleges Cup 1st Round - 20/01/2010
The Moulton College mens 'A' team moved into the 2nd Round of the British Colleges Cup thanks to an overwhelming win over a gutsy but eventually outclassed Worcester team. From the outset Worcester found the intensity of Moultons defence difficult to cope with. The home side were able to force a number of turnovers leading to easy scores. Moulton raced to a 16-0 lead after just four minutes and led 34-13 at the end of the first period. The pattern continued into the second quarter which Moulton took 36-9 to lead 70-22 at half time. With Moulton having such a strong position, coach Mark Dunning was able to experiment with some alternative defences. The changes meant that Moulton only took the third period 19-14 but it was business as usual in the final quarter with Moulton taking 32 points while only conceding 9 thereby taking the game 121-45 victory. In the 76 point win Matt Usher and Merson Paul led the Moulton scoring with 22 and 20 points respectively while no less than five other Moulton players Ben Budgen, Ashley Harcort-Billingham, Jacob Holt, Jordan Nembhhard, and Bertie Robinson all scored in double figures. Brave 'B' team beaten by Loughborough20/01/2010
The Moulton College 'B' team put up a brave performance before going down to the 'A' team of Loughborough College. The Moulton players knew just how tough the game was going to be as Loughborough had reached the Final of the East Midlands Tournament in which they were beaten by Moulton's 'A' team. Mouton refused to be phased by their illustrious opponents and midway through the second period were still in contention. However fatigue set in and Loughborough were able to pull away to lead 46-27 at half time. Loughborough dominated the third period which they won 28-9 but Moulton rallied bravely in the fourth which they narrowly lost finally going down 95-52. The Moulton scoring was dominated by three players led by Chris Knight with 14, Craig Hampton and Daniel Obasa supporting well with 12 and 11 points respectively. Cox 'assists' Moulton to the 2nd RoundBritish Colleges Women's Cup 1st Round - 20/01/2010
An amazing display from Moulton point guard Imogen Cox helped Mouton to advance into the 2nd Round of the British Colleges Cup. Cox dished out a stunning nineteen assists as well as scoring 22 points. With Katie Bayliss scoring an impressive 21 points, most of them from Cox passes on the fast break, COLVIC had no answer to the speed of the counterattacks. Moulton also pressurised the Colchester ball handlers with a full court press. Coach John Collins was full of praise for the work of all seven of his players After a slow start Moulton got into gear to lead 24-6 after the first period of play but COLVIC battled back in the second quarter which Moulton took by just a single point. Moultons defensive pressure told in the second half with Charllii Cropp 10 points and Christina Wise 9 points supporting Cox and Bayliss well in the scoring stakes. Previous Sports Reports
