RFU AASE League - 24/2/2010

Worcester 6th Form College 0  -  17 Moulton College

Moulton travelled to Worcester 6th Form for their penultimate league match in the Northern half of the RFU AASE league. With Moulton currently sitting top of the league the pressure was on to maintain this advantage as the end of the season approaches.

The game started well for Moulton with some good play on a surface that was proving difficult to get any traction. However Mouton's usual vigour and enthusiasm was missing and the early pressure was not converted to points. Worcester were competing very hard at the breakdown and playing very well tactically causing lots of problems for the Moulton side.

Despite this Moulton got onto the scoreboard first with a penalty from Ben Criddle. Worcester dominated after the penalty with only some good scramble defence preventing them from scoring, but questions need to be asked about the first up tackling from Moulton. It took some good reading of the game from Moulton's Ben Nutley to break this pressure coming up with an intercept try which was converted by Ben Criddle. Moulton were lucky to be 10 - 0 up at half time.

The pattern for the second half was similar to the first with Moulton becoming more and more frustrated with the way they were playing and their inability to deal with a very committed and hard working Worcester side. The game started to get fractious with both teams having players in the sin bin. Moulton started to engineer some good field position with an attacking line out close to the Worcester try line. A good catch and drive play resulted in skipper Tom Holliday scoring and Ben Criddle converting. If Moulton thought that this would turn the game in their favour they were massively wrong as Worcester continually attacked making Moulton defend for the rest of the game.

Moulton ran out winners 17-0 but credit must be given to Worcester who deserved to take something away from the game.

Moulton College Women's Basketball Academy

The Moulton College girls' team has been handicapped by the loss of three key players this season. Two of those players Sascha Thompson and Whitney Bain returned to action this week and helped their team to victories on successive days.

England Basketball Schools and Colleges Championships - 23/2/2010

Kingsley 6th Form College 62  -  73 Moulton College

The Moulton College women's team advanced to the next round of the England Basketball Association's Schools and Colleges Championships with a win over Kingsley 6th Form College from Redditch. The game saw the return of Sascha Thompson after a serious knee injury and it was the introduction of Thompson that changed the course of the game.

Initially Kingsley, playing in a rather unorthodox style had caused the Moulton girls many problems. The Moulton players seemed to find it difficult to cope with the dark sports hall and slippery floor, Kingsley led 21-16 after the first period and a shock looked to be on the cards. The Moulton girls pulled themselves together in the second quarter which they won 21-15 to take a 37-36 half time lead but they were still being troubled by the home side's tactics which could only be described as 'Route One'.

Some defensive adjustments were made at half time and Moulton controlled the second half and with Katie Bayliss scoring freely off the fast break and Thompson also making a significant contribution Moulton moved to a 73-62 victory. In the 11 point win Bayliss scored 29 points while Thompson contributed 22.

British Colleges Midland Conference - 24/2/2010

Birmingham Metropolitan College 27  -  69 Moulton College

The next day it was the turn of Whitney Bain another Moulton player to have undergone major knee surgery, to return to the team in a Conference game against the newly formed Birmingham Metropolitan College. Birmingham Met is an amalgamation of three large Birmingham colleges and this game was played at the Sutton Coldfield campus.

"Met" were a big athletic team and what they lacked in skill they made up for with enthusiasm and physicality. In the early stages of the game Moulton had a great deal of trouble getting hold of the ball as the “Met's” players dominated the rebounding phase of the game. Eventually Moulton got into their running game and then caused their opponents massive problems with their pressure defence forcing a number of turn-overs.

Bain entered the game midway through the first period and immediately made an impact with a determined drive to basket. With Laura Henderson, Sascha Thompson and Christina Wise 'boxing out' well Moulton began to control the boards and were so able to launch a number of fast break offences and take a 16-8 first period lead. Moulton's defence continued to dominate for the rest of the game and as the Birmingham side became more and more frustrated Moulton were able to cruise to a comfortable if physically bruising win.

In the 42 points victory Imogen Cox had a superb game top scoring with 18 points and also controlling the game superbly. Sascha Thompson maintained her comeback form with 14 points while Bain contributed 13 points and Charlie Cropp and Katie Bayliss 9 apiece.

British Colleges Cup Round 3 - 24/2/2010

Milton Keynes College 83  -  73 Moulton College

The Moulton College men's 'A' team are out of the British Colleges Cup after suffering a 10 points defeat at the hands of local rivals Milton Keynes. The defeat could almost entirely be put down to an awful second period when MK outscored Moulton 24-8 to take a 39-35 half time lead. All this after Moulton had taken the first quarter 27-15 thanks for a barrage of three-pointers from Jonny Yates.

Moulton made every effort to close the gap in the third period of play but were guilty of poor shot selection and they gave the ball away on too many occasions. MK took the period 26-20 to open up a 10 points lead and they were able to hold onto this lead to the end of the game.

In the ten point loss Yates top scored with 25 points including seven three-pointers. Jordan Nembhard contributed 14 points, Merson Paul and Matt Usher scored 12 and 10 points respectively and Jacob Holt was his usual energetic self scoring 8 points.

Coach Mark Dunning was again disappointed that his team had shown themselves able to compete with one of the strongest college teams in the country for long periods of the game but then let the game slip away by committing crucial errors.

Moulton 'B' team go down to Wyggeston

British Colleges Participation League - 24/02/2010
Moulton College 'B' 40  -  66 Queen Elizabeth College Wyggeston

Just before Christmas Moulton recorded an amazing comeback win against QE Wyggeston so the Leicester students arrived at Moulton eager for revenge. QE edged the first period of play 25-16 with Moulton missing a lot of scoring opportunities but needing to close the gap in the second quarter they totally fell apart losing it 14-4 to trail 39-20 at half time.

Moulton competed well in the third period which was tied 13 all but they just couldn't close the gap. QE controlled the final period of play to take the game 66-40 despite the best efforts of Moulton's Chris Knight. The Moulton big man was awesome scoring 18 points as well as blocking 10 shots and pulling down 18 rebounds.

BCS East Midlands League - 24/2/2010

Bilborough College 3  -  1 Moulton College

A top of the table clash between two old adversaries proved to be a close and tense game on a cold, bitter day in Nottingham. The game started with the home side dominating possession and taking the game to Moulton, stopping any attack Moulton managed to put together. As the half wore on Bilborough started to expose Moulton's midfield and created a number of opportunities but despite the constant pressure they failed to capitalise on the advantage. Jenna Looker saw two shots go agonisingly wide before a lovely ball through the heart of the Moulton defence saw the home side take a one nil lead going into half time.

Some home truths from the coach and a shuffling of the pack saw Moulton College come out fighting and they went close a number of times with high balls over the defence. However despite April Malin and Shana Haynes best efforts Moulton College could not find their way past a resilient keeper. Another well worked move by the home side saw them increase their lead further as the game entered the final phase. Some sloppy play from a tired Moulton team saw Bilborough College wrap up the game with a beautifully struck shot from the edge of the area. Sarah Pestall grabbed a late consolation goal for Moulton with the last kick of the game after the referee allowed play to continue despite an injury to a Bilborough player. Bilborough College now leapfrog Moulton at the top of the table with a game in hand. Final Score Bilborough College 3, Moulton College 1

BCS East Midlands League - 24/2/2010

Moulton College 3  -  4 Queen Elizabeth & Wyggeston College

It was a disappointing day for the hockey lads as they travelled up to Leicester to play in the BCS East Midlands league. It had been over 3 weeks since the squad had played together due to the inclement weather, training had also been affected and this showed in the first fifteen minutes of the game as the team looked a little rusty. However, it was quite an evenly matched game until QE broke the deadlock through a deflected goal. Moulton pushed for an equaliser but QE took advantage of this and scored another in open play.

Following half time, Moulton upped their game and Alex Blunt scored their first after an excellent run up the left by Harry Peart. Naisan Dehghani and Liam Cassidy worked tirelessly in midfield but a small mistake in defence saw the ball deflect into the goal off a Moulton foot for QE to score their third. Moulton again responded well but were denied an opportunity to score following a penalty corner when Courtney Horner's efforts went high above the posts. QE then scored their fourth despite an infringement at the top of the D which the umpire failed to spot.

Moulton dominated the final ten minutes of the game and Lewis Ward scored the second goal from his trade mark solo run and a superb Joe Baillie strike saw Moulton edge closer. QE were then under pressure but managed to hold on until the final whistle.

Though some positive aspects can be taken from the game, it was not one of Moulton's better performances and they look to improve against North Lincolnshire rivals John Leggett next week at home.

Moulton advance in British Colleges Cup

British Colleges Cup Round 2 - 10/02/2010

Derby College 64  -  86 Moulton College

The Moulton College men's 'A' team advanced to the 3rd Round of the British Colleges Cup thanks to a convincing win over Derby College. At times Moulton played some of their best basketball of the season combining efficient offence with intensity on defence that forced their opponents into a number of errors.

The first period was close but Moulton just edged the lead 23-18 with Merson Paul scoring freely from the perimeter and close to the basket. The Moulton coaching staff were generally pleased with the team's efforts. They had created a number of scoring opportunities although failing to convert while Derby were only in the game as they had been awarded a number of free throws.

The second quarter very much mirrored the first with Derby's two shooting guards Hallam and Byard scoring consistently from beyond the arc. Darius Innis for Moulton came off the bench and 'lit up' the game with a string of scores close to the basket. Moulton took the period 24-17 to establish a 47-35 half time lead.

So far this season the third period has been a nightmare for Moulton, but not in this game. Some hard-nosed, man-to-man defence kept Derby to just 10 points. Moulton failed to capitalise and only scored 15 but at 62-45 going into the final period of play Mouton held the decisive advantage.

Unfortunately Moulton's fourth quarter performance was the worst of the game. The team's discipline disappeared as players tried to take on the entire Derby defence. It drew harsh words from Coach Mark Dunning but his team cruised through for an 86-64 win.

For Moulton, Merson Paul top scored with 21 points, Darius Innis and Jonny Yates supported well with 16 and 12 points respectively while Matt Usher enjoyed a good all-round game scoring 11 points and pulling down 14 rebounds.

Northants Schools U18 cup - 10/02/2010

Moulton College 64  -  7 Prince William School Oundle

Moulton College 2nd XV travelled the short distance to face PWS Oundle in the first round of the Northants Schools U18 cup in changeable weather conditions with snow flurries and sunshine in equal measure.

The match was played at Oundle RFC (great supporters of PWS) but the pitch was heavy and did not look like it would suit a running rugby game. However Moulton opened up well with Sam Phipps rounding his opposite number to score in the corner. The PWS team were tenacious in their defence and despite Moulton enjoying the bulk of the possession they had to fight hard for every inch of ground. This territorial advantage would eventually yield results with Moutons' Captain Jack Campbell, Alex Cavener and Sam Phipps scoring his second to take Moulton 24-0 ahead at half time.

The second half saw PWS continue to struggle for possession despite successfully disrupting the Moulton College line out and making the Moulton team fight hard for any yards. The PWS resilience and spirit was apparent and it took former PWS pupil Grant Snelling to get the Moulton score sheet moving again.

This eased the way to a quick flurry of tries with Dan Small, Dan Lamb and Rhys Thornton (2) all getting on the score sheet. The PWS did not give up and scored a well worked and well deserved consolation try.

Moulton certainly new they had been in a game and it was a much closer affair than the 64-7 scoreline would suggest.

BCS League - 10/02/2010

Moulton College 18  -  12 Grimsby College

Grimsby made the long journey south to face Moulton for the second time this year - the first match resulted in a very close game when Moulton led for most of the match until the final quarter then Grimsby took the lead before running out winners.

Determined not to let this happen again, Moulton started the match with pace and enthusiasm. With a couple of players unwell the girls adapted to playing in new positions with excellent communication on court. Leanne Riley filled in as centre and had an excellent match, reading the game very well to help her to control play. The girls continued to work hard throughout the game with a fantastic team spirit. Hopefully this will continue into the final matches of the season.

BCS Regional Cup - 10/02/2010

Moulton College 0  -  1 Brook House College

This was a hard fought game played in horrendous weather conditions with sleet, snow and hail raining down on the teams throughout the match. Both teams played a 4-5-1 formation and cancelled each other out for much of the match. Any chances made, were effortlessly dealt with by both keepers.

A deflected shot in the 44th minute hit the cross bar, falling neatly into the path of the oncoming Brook House College forward who tapped it in to the back of the net to make it one-nil.

The second half continued much the same with very few chances being created. As the score line suggests Brook House College probably edged the match despite Moulton's fighting efforts which almost pulled back an equaliser when hitting the cross bar in the 89th minute.

BCS Regional Cup Semi-final - 10/02/2010

Cambridge Regional College 5  -  2 Moulton College

The British College Sport Regional semi final saw Cambridge Regional College up against Moulton College for the first time. The game began in tough, cold conditions with the home team dominating possession and peppering the Moulton goal with wave after wave of attack. As the half progressed Moulton Girl's finally found their passing game, resulting in the first corner of the match. Sammy Jo Pebody swung a beautiful right footed cross into the 6 yard box with pin point accuracy which was met by Jenna Looker's head to put the visitors ahead. However, within 10 minutes the home side found themselves back on level terms with a deflected shot off Laura Whittle.

Changes to the Moulton team with substitute Rachel Britton replacing Jess Law in midfield upset the visitor's rhythm, but within 10 minutes the substitute picked up a hamstring injury and was replaced by Orella Roach. Cambridge Regional College capitalised on the situation and pulled ahead 2 -1.

Moulton College started the 2nd half brightly pushing forward and gradually applied pressure with some good interchanges between April Malin and Sarah Judge. Moulton was awarded a free kick 30 yards out from goal and Sammy Jo Pebody stepped up and stroked a beautiful shot past the keeper to draw level. However the old adage of being at your most vulnerable when you have just scored rang true as Cambridge retook the lead within 5 minutes with an excellent shot low into the corner of Shana Haynes goal.

Despite the pressure, Moulton continued to push forward and were rewarded with a corner kick. However, from this promising position a swift counterattack from Cambridge saw Moulton's defence outnumbered and Shana Haynes caught their forward with a trailing leg and the home team were awarded a penalty. A confidently taken spot kick saw Cambridge take a 2-goal lead and despite some gallant play from April Malin in midfield, Cambridge continued to exert pressure and 5 minutes from time a solid header from the home team saw them stretch their lead even further. As the game drew to a close Shana Haynes made a number of outstanding saves to limit the score line to 5 -2.

A valiant effort from a tired Moulton College ends their cup run - they now turn their attention to the league on the 24th February where they will once again lock horns with Bilborough.

Player of the game April Malin.

Moulton College East Midlands SEN 5-a-Side Champions - 10/02/2010

Students from Moulton College will represent the East Midlands region at the annual British College Sports National Championships in Loughborough in April following their recent success in the regional Special Educational Needs (SEN) 5 a side football tournament hosted by Derby College on Wednesday 10th February.

Ten teams took part, including two teams from Moulton College. The competition format was two groups of five teams playing against each other, with the top team in each group contesting the final.

The Moulton A team started off very brightly with a 14-0 win against Buxton College and followed with a 4-0 victory over Derby B. Their next match saw them take a 10-0 victory over New College Nottingham A and they finally made sure of a place in the final with a 2-0 win over former winners, South East Derby College.

The Moulton B team lost the opening game 3-0 to a well organised Grantham team followed by another 3-0 defeat to a very talented Derby A team. The third game was a tough 1-0 defeat by New College Nottingham B and although they claimed a 1-0 victory over Chesterfield College in the final group match, it was too late and Moulton B did not make it to the final.

The final was a tense encounter. Derby College had a few good early chances but after 5 minutes Moulton made the breakthrough when a long clearance from defence found Nick Harvey wide left, who squared the ball to an unmarked Mikey West to side foot the ball home. Derby College came really close to an equaliser late in the game but Moulton keeper Jamie Wynn made a fine save to ensure the 1-0 victory for Moulton.

Match report for Hockey Schools Tournament - 11/02/2010
Moulton College Men's Hockey Academy U18 Hockey in National Schools Cup - Midlands Round

As Northamptonshire County Champions, Moulton College Under 18 Boys travelled to Denstone College in Staffordshire in a bid to qualify for the Midlands Finals. This was the first time that Moulton had entered the competition so they were unsure what to expect. With three fifty minute games and only eight regular hockey players in the squad plus four keen sportsmen, it was always going to be a challenge.

Moulton College 0  -  5 King Edward School Birmingham

Moulton struggled to compete with the Birmingham County Champions who were a well organised side and the first half saw the Moulton defence under constant pressure. Keeper Luke Oakley, who was outstanding all day, made some good saves and the score going into the break was 3-0. The second half saw Moulton constantly improving and debutants Brandon Lazurus and Bradley Green were close to scoring that elusive goal but KES were victors, winning 5-0.

Moulton College 2  -  2 Thomas Telford

The second game of the day was against Thomas Telford, the Shropshire Champions. This was a much more physical and feisty affair! Thomas Telford took the lead following a penalty corner but Moulton, who remained calm, played some good hockey with Liam Cassidy and Courtney Horner distributing the ball well in midfield. Moulton equalised just after half time when Cassidy converted a penalty corner. This unsettled Thomas Telford and Moulton capitalised with Joe Baillie scoring from an acute angle.

Moulton absorbed more pressure in the closing minutes and Thomas Telford equalised but in their hurry to score another goal, they became more ragged and disunited. Harry Peart was sin binned for an off the ball offence and a Thomas Telford player was also in the bin after dissent towards the umpire. With both teams down to 10 players, either team could have scored the winner but the game ended at two all. Antonio Angilar-Rohan should be commended on his ability to keep his cool, despite being goaded by the opposition.

Moulton College 2  -  6 Denstone College

Staffordshire Champions Denstone were unbeaten in their earlier two matches, so this game was more of a formality but Moulton were determined to perform to the best of their ability. This was a very open game and the scoreline did not reflect the Moulton performance. Rob Elliott, Antonio Aguilar-Rohan, Lewis Ward and Sam Baker played beyond expectation and though Denstone took an early 2 goal lead, Moulton certainly had their opportunities to score with Harry Peart and Bradley Green coming close.

Going into the second half, Moulton were 3-0 down but seemed more relaxed which Denstone seemed to appreciate as this was a fun, good spirited contest. Courtney Horner scored Moulton's first goal following a penalty corner but Denstone replied with a superb strike. Moulton again went on the counter attack and Joe Baillie scored an impressive second goal of the day. As legs began to tire in the final minutes, Denstone were able to score a further two goals. However, this did not dampen the spirits of the Moulton team and the game demonstrated some excellent sportsmanship.

A big thank you to Moulton School Student Tom Swain who attended the tournament as the representative umpire.

With half the squad eligible to compete at Under 18 level next year, Moulton expects to better their performance in this national competition. The regular U19 team resume their BCS East Midlands League challenge after study week.

BCS East Midlands League 03/02/10
Moulton College 0  -  2 Bilborough College

Alex Blunt, Dan Whitfield (2), Liam Cassidy

Moulton scored two goals in the final ten minutes to ensure victory over Bilborough College and keep them in second place in the East Midlands BCS league. Moulton started the game quickly and Alex Blunt put Moulton into an early lead. However Bilborough retaliated and scored two goals in quick succession following a barrage of penalty corners. Moulton then regained their composure and Danny Whitfield scored from a Moulton penalty corner shortly before half time.

The second half was again dominated by Moulton who had more possession but struggled to penetrate the Bilborough 'D'. It was only in the final quarter of the game as both teams began to tire that Moulton managed to break the deadlock with Whitfield scoring his second penalty corner strike. Liam Cassidy scored the 4th and final goal from a well timed Harry Peart cross.

A reasonable team performance for this improving side.

SQUAD: Luke Oakley, Danny Whitfield (C), Liam Cassidy, Lewis Ward, Sam Baker, Joe Baillie, Harry Peart, Ben Stuart, Adam Smith, Alex Blunt, Naisan Dehghani

The next fixture is for the Under 18 boys squad who, as joint County Champions with Northampton School for Boys, will now represent Northamptonshire in the Midlands Zonal Round on Thursday 11th February, the winners of which will go through to the Regional Finals in April.

Northamptonshire County Championship Pool game - 03/02/2010
Corby Business Academy 45  -  103 Moulton College

The Moulton College men's 'A' team became County Champions and advanced to the Regional stage of the School and Colleges Championship thanks to an overwhelming win over a plucky but outclassed Corby Business Academy side.

By half time the game was as good as over with Moulton leading 64-16 but they were guilty of committing a number of errors in the second half which stopped the winning margin being even higher. They will not be happy reflecting that they only won the second half 39-29.

Coach Mark Dunning was delighted that all twelve players scored, led by 19 points from Jacob Holt and 18 from Matt Usher. Darius Innis, Khaled Mahdi and Jordan Nembhard also scored in double figures but Dunning feels his team still have a long way to go before they can compete with the better teams in the various competitions an said 'A lot will depend on how hard individual players work to improve their personal performances'.

"Brave Moulton girls no match for Burleigh."

England Basketball's Schools & Colleges Championships - 03/02/2010
Burleigh College 87  -  31 Moulton College

The Moulton College girl's team made the short journey to Loughborough for the Schools and Colleges Championships with just five players. A combination of injuries, illness and university visits was responsible for the poor turnout but the game had to be played by the end of the week deadline date.

Even at full strength Moulton faced a tough task against a Burleigh side containing an England junior international, a player standing at 6 feet 3 inches and a scattering of national league players. With just five players the task was almost impossible and so it proved. Moulton did a great job of pressurising Burleigh's first shot but in the rebound department they just couldn't cope. This resulted in Burleigh's two centres amassing no less than 55 points between them, many of them from put backs.

To their credit the Moulton girls never gave up despite being close to exhaustion and right to the end they played their running game. Laura Henderson and Christina Wise battled bravely against the Burleigh twin towers and Cheryka Holmes never stopped running hard in offence. Imogen Cox proved a nightmare to the Burleigh guards and hustled tirelessly on defence while Katie Bayliss was always an offensive threat even against taller opponents.

As a result of this defeat Burleigh and Bilborough will progress to the next round.

Netball
BCS League - 03/02/2010
John Leggott College 12  -  9 Moulton College

After a good match last week the girls began positively. At the end of the first half the score was four all and the two 'rugby' girls that had filled places for injured players were doing well. Moulton were benefitting from excellent defending by Stacey Garnett and Danielle Watt but the girls were becoming increasingly frustrated with the amount of contact on court.

Beth Stacey continued to play an excellent game in her position as centre but unfortunately was unable to keep control of the play and Moulton were beaten 12-9.

Football
Friendly - 03/02/2010
Moulton College 1  -  1 Milton Keynes

Moulton's away league fixture was called off at the eleventh hour due to a water-logged pitch this week and as Milton Keynes game was also cancelled due to adverse weather conditions a hastily arranged friendly was organised.

The game was played on Moulton's all weather rubber-crumb pitch.

Both sides played some neat and attractive football with Milton Keynes having the majority of play but lacking a cutting edge to their attack. Moulton showed a bigger threat in front of goal with Ryan Cherry and Lewis Lagore making more chances than their opposition, however they were not able to take advantage of these and the first forty-five minutes ended 0-0.

The second half continued as the first. Milton Keynes gained most of the possession, looking very comfortable moving the ball around. There was some great play from their midfield, passing a great through ball to their centre forward who rounded the Moulton keeper, resulting in the first goal of the match.

After this goal Moulton changed their system to 4-3-3 and took advantage of a tiring Milton Keynes team, with a flow of chances falling to Lewis Lagore. After squandering chances he eventually netted the equaliser from close range in the last minute of the game.

The 1-1 final result was a fair outcome based on the two teams' ability and performance on the day.
