Jess Lovell 3, Mollie Gardner Moulton have reached the National Finals of the BCS Knockout Cup with an emphatic win against Greenhead College and played some of their best hockey all year with every squad member committed to the win. Greenhead were an even match for Moulton with players of a similar ability (Greenhead included an England U21 player) so the game started with both sides taking the measure of each other. Greenhead took the upper hand and Moulton goalie Alex Holmes was called upon to make an early vital save. Amy Wykes had her best game of the season at centre back stopping anything that came her way and her fellow defenders Ellen Johnston, Hannah Newlyn-Jones and Becca Hargin were consistent in their marking and tackling. Moulton soon began to gain control and Jess Lovell opened the scoring following some excellent work between Jemma White and Emily Broughton. Lovell soon made it two with an impressive reverse stick shot supplied by Lottie Allnatt and then Lovell made it a hat trick tipping in Mollie Gardner’s cross. Moulton went into the break 3 – 0 up but aware that Greenhead would try everything they could to score. The second half started at a frantic pace as Greenhead pushed everything forward. Moulton conceded a barrage of penalty corners but were unable to convert them, mainly due to some excellent goal keeping by Holmes and dominance of Captain Laura Whittle. Moulton also had their fair share of opportunities and with 10 mins left on the clock Gardner was rewarded for her hard work in midfield, converting a well worked penalty corner. Moulton could now relax as the very first BCS Cup final for Moulton was in reach and they held on for the final minutes of the game to be assured of a win and a clean sheet!! An outstanding team performance by all the team and a big THANK YOU to all the supporters who turned out in the rain. The Finals are on Wednesday 5th May, where Moulton will face Chichester College at 12pm at Bloxham School in Banbury. Squad: Alex Holmes (GK), Laura Whittle (C), Amy Wykes, Ellen Johnston, Hannah Newlyn-Jones, Becca Hargin, Jemma White, Mollie Gardner, Lucy Quirke, Emily Broughton, Jo Livesay, Jess Lovell, Lottie Allnatt. Men's Rugby AcademyRFU AASE League Semi-final - 21/04/2010
The Moulton College 'A' team faced one of their biggest challenges of the season when they took on South East Essex College (SEEC) at the John Ashby sports centre. To lose by just six points could be seen as a very reasonable result but the team will look back on a number of unforced errors that undoubtedly cost them the chance of victory. After winning the Northern AASE league Moulton College faced the runners up in the Southern league in a semi-final clash at the Pitsford pitch on Wednesday 21/04/10. Everything looked set for Moulton with a home draw and with sunny perfect weather to play in. However, this feeling did not last for long as Ivybridge got themselves onto the score sheet within the first minutes. They pressurised Moulton at the base of a scrum causing a dropped ball which the Ivybridge scrum-half gathered and raced under the posts to give the visiting team the lead. Moulton dominated the rest of the half in terms of territory and possession but showed a lack of composure and patience in the opposition 22 failing to convert numerous chances. Ivybridge were well organised and committed in their defensive work and it took some excellent interplay to allow Moulton number 8, Grant Snelling, to score out wide. The half ended with the score 7-5 to Ivybridge and all to play for. The Moulton team were confident that if they could convert the chances on offer then the game was within reach but Ivybridge had other ideas and again scored within the first few minutes of kick-off. Ivybridge started to display their class with some excellent ball retention work and some good tactical kicking pinning the Moulton side back. The visitors were much more clinical throughout the game converting any chances on offer. The effort, application and intent to play have to be applauded but unfortunately it was the visitors who kept their cool and capitalised on rare defensive errors from Moulton. The score and the approaching end of the game spurred the Moulton team on as they could see the final place slipping away. It was taking some excellent defending from Ivybridge to keep Moulton at bay allowing only a penalty chance that Ben Criddle duly converted. This was the last score of the game and when the whistle went Moulton had lost 8 – 19 Ivybridge. The players were understandably disappointed as they had given everything in the game but realised that with application you must have control and patience. The Ivybridge team were excellent ambassadors for their College and we wish them all the best for the final. Previous Sports Reports
