For the second week running the Moulton College 'A' team got close to their opponents but ended up losing a game they could well have won. Earlier in the season Moulton lost to Met by over thirty points so this result represented a massive improvement but the players were bitterly disappointed that they weren't able to clinch the win. Moulton made an appalling start to the game and were quickly 7-zero down but, thanks to some sharp shooting from point guard Bertie Robinson, got back to 26 all at the end of the first period of play. With both teams employing a pressing defence the game was very much an end-to-end affair with both teams at times scoring freely then turning the ball over under pressure. A short range jumper from James Ashley gave Moulton the lead at 36-35 but the team were then guilty of four minutes of total indiscipline. Mets went on a 13-5 scoring surge to take a 48-40 half time lead they scarcely deserved. Coach Mark Dunning's half time team talk was all about discipline and his players responded well, outscoring their opponents 16-5 to take the lead at 56-53 with Ashley scoring freely at the end of the Moulton break. Having gained the lead Moulton inexplicably then proceeded to produce probably the worst six minutes of their season so far. Mets outscored Moulton 10-2 in that nightmare period to take a 69-58 lead which was to prove unassailable. On a number of occasions during the final quarter Moulton made inroads into that lead but the result was never really in doubt and the West Midlanders held on for the 88-80 win. For Moulton, Ashley top scored with 22 points with Robinson supporting well with 17 points thanks in the main to that first quarter surge. Only two other Moulton players, Conner Deans with 11 points and skipper Jacob Holt with 10, were able to get into double figures. Basketball AcademyBritish Colleges Participation League (17.2.11)
The Moulton College 'B' team recorded what looks on paper to be a routine win over Grantham College, a team that took Moulton to overtime earlier in the season. The win wasn't as easy as the score line suggests with Moulton trailing 16-15 at half time. During the first two periods of play Moulton seemed more intent on complaining about the playing conditions and, with both Chris Knight and Jared Comrie on three fouls, a first league defeat of the season looked to be on the cards. Coach Karen Goodrich switched her team to a zone defence in the second half and, with Danny McIntyre inspiring the team, Moulton took control of the game. At the back of the Moulton zone Knight and Elijah McLeod were rebounding superbly, enabling Moulton to launch a number of fast breaks to take the lead early in the third quarter. Moulton outscored their opponents 18-6 in that period to set up a 33-22 lead and they maintained their quality in the final quarter with Brien Mehmet hustling well and Lewis Schweir finding his scoring touch. Moulton took the final stanza 19-6 to win the game 52-28 to the delight of Goodrich who was as pleased with her team's second half performance as she had been disappointed by their first half efforts. Men's Hockey Academy"Moulton qualify for Regional Final!"England Hockey under 18 Schoolboys Cup - Northamptonshire (3.2.11)Moulton College hosted the Northamptonshire Round of the Under 18 Schoolboys cup where the winners and runners up go forward to the Regional Zone finals with the other 14 top teams in the Midlands. Moulton felt reasonably confident that, if they won their first game, they had an opportunity to qualify. Their first game was against Northampton School for Boys, who Moulton had never beaten in this competition. The game started at a fast pace and Moulton dominated much of the play but they were unable to capitalise on this due to some excellent goalkeeping from NSB. As Moulton began to get frustrated, NSB took their chances on the counter attack but were unable to convert into goals. It was in the closing minutes of the game when Moulton first year, and former NSB pupil, James Knibb scored the only goal of the game and Moulton were 1 0 winners. The next game was in total contrast with the first. Oundle School were extremely well organised and physically dominated the game, putting the Moulton defence under a great deal of pressure from the start. Goalkeeper Luke Oakley made some outstanding saves but Oundle kept coming and capitalised on any mistakes that had been made. However, Moulton regained their composure and Joe Baillie was unfortunate not to score at the opposing end. The game ended 3 0 to Oundle and, despite losing, it gave Moulton an insight into the level that they should be at. In the next two matches, Northampton School for Boys beat Prince William School 1 0 but suffered a 3 0 loss to Oundle. So, Moulton went into the final game against Prince William School knowing that Oundle were County Champions and that a win or draw would ensure that valuable second place. However, the game started off sedately with both teams making unforced errors. It was Moulton who broke the deadlock mid way through the game with Joe Baillie opening his account for the afternoon. Baillie then fired another one home from open play; Stephan Williams scored the third from a well worked penalty corner and Baillie sealed his hat trick in the dying moments of the game. This victory confirmed Moulton's qualification to the Midlands Zone Final. The remaining match was a close contest between Oundle and Prince William with Oundle converting their dominance with just 14 seconds on the clock to win 1 0. So Moulton are Northamptonshire Runners up and will play at Repton School on Wednesday 16th February. This will be a challenging experience as it will be another round robin, this time between Moulton College, Repton School, Worksop College and the winner from Worcestershire County, all of whom have an outstanding reputation in Hockey. The Moulton College 'A' team travelled to the Lilleshall National Sports Centre in Shropshire optimistic of reversing an early season defeat against TCAT. They returned through the traffic jams of the M6 in a depressed state after slipping to a five point defeat. The game was played at a frenetic pace with both teams adopting pressure defences. These defences led to a high scoring game, with both teams on occasions scoring at will, then on other occasions inexplicably giving the ball to their opponents. TCAT probably deserved the win because when they were contained in the half court they showed more discipline than Moulton. Having said that, Moulton had their chances to win the game and will reflect on some missed shots, defensive errors and turn-overs towards the end of the game. After a close first quarter (25-22 to TCAT) which saw James Ashley slicing through the TCAT full court zone defence to score 12 points, TCAT were able to extend their lead to 54-42 by half time. This lead was extended to 18 points at 62-44 early in the third period of play, but Moulton were able to tighten their defence and an 8-zero run at the end of the quarter got them to within nine points at 74-65. The gap was further reduced to 86-83 but on each occasion TCAT inspired by their Lithuanian guard Liutkus were able to make decisive plays, not least of all a crucial steal in the last minute of the game. In the agonising five point defeat, Moulton's leading scorers were Ashley and Merson Paul with 26 and 25 points respectively and they received good support from Jacob Holt with 16 points and Sion Ekata with 10 points. Moulton kicked off with the strong wind in their favour and immediately had a chance on goal, as a fine run and cross by Ashley Eales was met by Mapeo Mendes at the back post, but his header was comfortably saved by the Oxford goalkeeper. The strong wind played a big part as both teams failed to get to grips with it and therefore the game lacked any real quality. Ben Ford and Daniel Fogg in midfield worked really hard to create something for the home side, but were often let down by their final ball. Andrew Felton did have a chance near the end of the first half, after some good work down the left from Adam Spalding and Jack Vacher, but he screwed his shot wide from twelve yards. The Moulton defence were rarely troubled as Oliver Goddard and Michael Ramsdale took no chances and cleared any danger immediately; the couple of times Oxford did manage to break through, Jordan May in the home goal was equal to it. The second half was pretty uneventful as Moulton stayed in control without really troubling the Oxford defence and as Oxford began to get frustrated they began to lose their discipline. A succession of free-kicks then stopped the game from having any flow. In the last ten minutes both sides did have chances to win the game, but in the end a draw was a fair result. Moulton worked very hard as a team to keep a clean sheet, so will look back on it as a point well earned. Men's Football Academy 2nd XI"Moulton produce one of their best performances of the season to defeat Peterborough"British Colleges League (9.2.11)
Both teams started well on a very bumpy and hard pitch. The home side started the game playing a 4-5-1 system, over-loading the midfield and winning a lot of the second balls. This led to the first goal as Moulton's Lewis Wheeler was in two minds whether to commit himself into midfield or not. Lewis did commit and gave the home side room on the wing for Jones to cross a lovely ball for Smith to easily stroke into the back of the net. The conditions made it very hard for any of the teams to play a lot of football and chances were few and far between in the first half. In the second half Moulton made a few changes to personnel and shape with Ashley Ogden coming on for Lewis Wheeler and reverting to a 3-5-2 formation to combat the home side's dominance in midfield. This seemed to work well and Moulton started winning a lot of the ball. Moulton's captain Adam Husbands got injured and Stefan Care came on as his replacement. Moulton's dominance started to convert into chances with Jack Percival hitting the crossbar and Luke Hughes going close to getting an equaliser. Moulton's Ashley Ogden, Jacob Wilson and Luke Hughes began to run the midfield but it was Nathaniel Hepworth who got the equaliser with a 25 yard thunderbolt into the top corner. The home side looked beaten and, with the introduction of Georges Allen's pace to the attack, it only looked a matter of time before Moulton would get a winner. It was a great through ball from Ashley Ogden and George Allen's pace and cool finish that sealed a well deserved win for Moulton. Despite a spirited performance from last year's finalists Moulton crashed out of the BCS National Knockout cup on Wednesday to a visiting John Leggett side. Moulton had not played many competitive matches this year and made a nervous start. As their confidence grew so did their standard of hockey and there were moments of promise. However, John Leggett were more experienced and were able to capitalise on their chances. Christina Wise had an outstanding game in goal as she was constantly peppered with shots. Jo Livesay excelled in the midfield as she did not stop running all game and hassling the opposition. Captain Steph Brennan remained solid in central defence, though she was sin binned in the closing stages of the game for an uncharacteristic display of frustration. So, despite a disappointing score line, the team remained resolute and their efforts extended for the whole match. The main objective was to have fun with it and they were glad that they finally got to play a game! Men's Rugby Academy 1st XVRFU Elite League (9.2.11)
Report to follow Women's FootballBritish Colleges National Cup (9.2.11)
With the sun shining brightly, Moulton College girl's football team were fully focused on the game ahead against John Leggett from Lincolnshire. Having narrowly lost to Bilborough a fortnight ago in the league, this game gave the girls the opportunity to stake their claim in the British Colleges National Cup competition. Right from the start Moulton pressed the opposition into making mistakes and after 20 minutes Sammy Jo Pebody floated in a beautiful cross which Kelly Barnett was inches from tapping in at the far post. Good interchanges in midfield between Hollie Bettles and Katie Hay, combined with excellent running from Chantelle Reeve, saw the home team go close once again. A pin point throw from Sammy Jo Pebody found Summer Copeland who dinked a great shot over the keeper into the far left of the goal. Moulton continued to use the ball with good effect and, 10 minutes before half time, a fortuitous pass found its way to Chantelle Reeve who slotted home to make it 2 - 0. During the second half both teams struggled for pace and John Leggett gave the ball away to Sarah Judge who whipped in a cross from the right hand side for April Malin to head just wide. As Moulton pushed forward they pressurised John Leggett into making a back pass which the keeper handled. Sammy Jo Pebody stepped up and blasted the ball past the keeper to give Moulton College a 3 goal advantage. As the second half entered the final stages John Leggett came close to pulling one back, but Jess Lovell and Emily Baldry ensured there was no way past for the opposition. Chantelle Reeve continued to terrorise the opposition defence but missed a great opportunity to seal the game with only the keeper to bea,t putting the ball inches wide. In the dying seconds a superb passage of play between Kelly Barnett, Sarah Judge and Katie Hay saw the latter score Moulton College's fourth goal to move them into the later stages of the competition where they will face either Balby Carr Community College from Doncaster or Grantham College.
