Support for Students

Embarking on a course of study can appear quite daunting, so the College has introduced a range of measures to help students overcome these hurdles. Every student has a personal tutor, who is responsible for building a close working relationship with them, and being the "friendly face to speak with in times of difficulty. The tutor will be part of the course team and will have a teaching input, so will quickly get to know the student. Part of the tutor’s role is to provide feedback on academic performance, and to help with course related activities such as Key Skills development and portfolio building. Equally important is the advice and support they can give on personal matters. They will help students to understand what is available in the College, how to get help with everything from money problems to health issues, and how to deal with the everyday difficulties, which can sometimes seem insurmountable.

Some students will have experienced learning difficulties at school and will be used to having additional support with their studies. Others will find the new methods of study and higher level of work more difficult to cope with, or may have some very specific needs for help with certain aspects of the course. The Learning Support staff assess all full time students to help identify anyone who could benefit from their support. This support may include regular attendance at the Learning Resource Centre, where the student will follow a dedicated programme of work tailored to meet their specific needs. Alternatively it may involve a support assistant working with the student in the classroom or workshop during the normal timetable. Our results over the years would indicate that where students take advantage of this support, their performance and final grades are much improved.

The Student Services Manager and team provide a port of call for students needing help with a whole range of problems. They can assist with making appointments to see the Counsellor, liaising with Local Education Authorities on funding matters, and can give advice on the various sources of funding available to students at the College.

The Student Welfare Manager has a responsibility to support all students with non-course related problems, and has established good links with Social Services, local Health Centres and many other agencies. A team of wardens organise social events and provide round the clock support for resident students.

The College nurses and a Counsellor are available each day to provide support, and call in specialist help should the need arise. The College Chaplain also provides support, particularly with spiritual issues, and works closely with younger students.

Site security is maintained throughout 24 hours of every day. It is reassuring to know that even throughout the night, there is someone on duty monitoring movement on and off the site.

The Careers Manager is responsible for ensuring that a programme of Careers Education and Guidance is delivered to all students as part of their tutorial programme. A well resourced Careers Centre incorporating a Connexions Access Point provides information on both careers and other areas of personal development.

Connexions Personal Advisers visit the college regularly to offer information, advice and guidance on an individual or group basis.

The college is a holder of the prestigious Career Mark and Matrix awards demonstrating its commitment to providing a high standard of support in careers education, information, advice and guidance.

Higher Education (HE)

Embarking on a higher education course can appear quite daunting so the College has introduced a range of measures to support students.

Personal Tutor

Every student has a personal tutor, who is responsible for building a close working relationship with them and being a ‘friendly face’ who can be consulted in times of difficulty. The tutor’s main role is to provide feedback on academic performance and identify measures to improve academic skills. In addition, they can provide support with personal matters and advise on how to get help with everything from financial difficulties to health issues.

Careers

Personal tutors provide students with careers education and guidance during tutorial sessions. Higher education students have access to the University of Northampton Careers Advice Service and additional careers information specifically for higher education students is held in the HE study area in the LRC.

Learning Support

Based in the HE Learning Support Centre on Main Site, HE Learning Support is available to any HE student, full time or part time, that may require it.

Services that are available include:

  • Drop in study skills workshops
  • Specialist individual study skills support
  • Dyslexia/dyspraxia screening and support
  • Help to access funding such as Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) for disability related study costs
