Deanna enrolled on the Rural Skills programme as she was keen to try out a variety of different areas such as animal care, horse care, horticulture and agriculture. The experience made her realise that her interests lie in animal care – especially horses – and she is now planning on moving on to the Level 2 Horse Care course next year.
“I really enjoyed the work experience at Lodge Farm Stables where I was able to practise the skills I learnt at college,” she said. “I’d definitely recommend the Rural Skills course because it provides you with a range of opportunities and allows you to try out different areas. My work experience allowed me to see what happens in the real world so I now know I’d like to work in the equine industry and in three years’ time hope to be working in stables.”
Although Deanna clearly enjoyed the practical aspects of the course, she revealed that she was also able to succeed in the classroom thanks to the support of her course manager in tutorials, sessions with her learning support assistant and advice from the college welfare team.
