Moulton College Women’s Basketball Team secured their third consecutive East Midlands title at the Regional Tournament held at Derby College. Moulton College finished the Tournament unbeaten successfully securing a place at the National Championships to be held in March next year.
The girls proved to be too strong against opposing colleges as they finished the tournament undefeated. Moulton defeated hosts Derby College / Noel Baker 25-4, followed by their most dominant performance against Gateway College winning convincingly 31-1. The final group game concluded with a 34-16 victory against Bilborough College influenced by some strong defensive performances from Rio Blessyn and Lauren Milne.
The East Midlands title was secured against Queen Elizabeth Wygeston College, winning the final 38-10.
Moulton College Women’s Basketball Coach Karen Goodrich was delighted with her team’s performance commenting, “This was a real team effort with all eight players making significant contributions to our success.”
Moulton Women’s Basketball Team will now travel to Bath in March representing the East Midlands in the National Championships. The players are aware they will face more stern opposition in Bath and will need to display another strong performance.
Six of Moulton College’s Female Basketball Academy players are currently undertaking the Advanced Apprenticeship in Sport Excellence (AASE) in Basketball. The AASE is designed to meet the needs of elite athletes aged 16-18 who wish to continue their sporting career and gain qualifications at the same time. It is notionally a two-year programme where apprentices receive additional support and guidance for their basketball development and education.
