Former Moulton College student Jamie Pike is, in his own words, having a fantastic time.
Jamie studied Btec. Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture at Moulton College and has gone on to study B.Sc. Plant Studies at the Eden project
Jamie developed his practical and theoretical skills in horticulture at Moulton College always with enthusiasm and eagerness and undertook additional qualifications in Brush cutter and Pesticide spraying. He took on all the challenges that were posed to him, including taking part in the Young Horticulturalist of the year Competition which he made through to the finals.
Jamie says ‘ I'm learning lots, however being surrounded by so many plants has given me horticultural kleptomania! There's so much to do and studying at Eden is brilliant. It was a little daunting at first, but with so many interesting people and fascinating plants I was very quickly distracted and forgot that I'd moved to Cornwall!
So far we've had guest lecturers talking about trips abroad to places like Malaysia and Australia. We've visited Rothampsted research, been given a micro propagation talk by Ros Smith (Who was awarded an RHS 'A.J. Waley Medal' for helping to protect a critically endangered species of Rhododendron).
We also have a weekly design lesson with Matt James and some challenging plant idents (luckily, Moulton gave me a bit of a head start with that!). We get to see Eden behind the scenes, visiting its nursery and labs. I can't wait for the next 2½ years’.
