Northampton Town FC Inspire the Next Generation at Moulton College

Northampton Town FC Inspire the Next Generation at Moulton College

Sports students at Moulton College were given a fantastic opportunity yesterday to hear from a cross section of staff from Northampton Town Football Club.

Kelvin Thomas, Club Chairman; Marc Richards, Club Captain; and representatives from marketing, media, physiotherapy, fitness and more were all there to inspire the students to consider all possible career opportunities in the sports industry.

Gerald Davies, Deputy Principal at Moulton College, said: “What a fantastic opportunity for our students to find out about the broad selection of careers available within football and sport as a whole. We are grateful that NTFC are so keen to invest their time in our sports stars of the future!”

During the event, Marc Richards inspired the students to work hard: “Some people have a perception that being a footballer is easy. It’s not. You have to work hard. At the end of the day, you need to be able to look at yourself in the mirror and know that you’ve done a good job – no matter which career option you choose!”

Kelvin Thomas explained how he progressed from studying to be a PE teacher to becoming chairman of the League One club. He also highlighted the similarities between the club’s players and the aspiring students: “They’re learning the game, just as you’re learning your sports subjects at college. Jimmy (Floyd Hasselbaink) is a teacher – he’s teaching the players. The difference is that their goal is to win football matches and yours is to pass your assessments.”

Students were not only given advice about their futures, but also given tips on things they can do now in preparation for a successful career in sport. Gareth Willsher, Head of Media, discussed the global power of social media and the importance of discretion and maintaining integrity; and Pablo Garcia, Fitness Coach, explained the player’s training methods and nutrition plans for peak physical fitness.

Gerald concluded: “I really hope that this unique experience has given our sports students the motivation they need to succeed on their chosen career path!”
