Moulton College welcomes former Saints coach

At the start of the academic year, we welcomed Philip Powell as our new Head of Rugby here at Moulton College.

Having been familiar with the college as both a former student and coaching volunteer, Philip said the role of Head of Rugby was something he had long aspired to, and he is delighted to have been appointed.

Having spent some time in various coaching roles at Northampton Saints Rugby Football Club including working with junior teams and on community projects Philip was enthusiastic about the links that the club has with Moulton College. Whether it be using the facilities for training, participating in community initiatives, providing opportunities to young players via the Rugby Academy or players taking a woodworking class he was keen to praise the links between the college and the team, which of course provide substantial benefits to our learners.

Comparing his role here with coaching at Northampton Saints Rugby Football Club he said it’s exciting to have seen the full picture from elite players to those who still need help to refine their skills. The two jobs present a very different set of challenges which Philip felt had given his career so far “a nice balance”.

Speaking about his students, Philip said that he always endeavours to put their needs first and focus not only on what they are achieving while they are at Moulton College but on where their skills could lead them in future. He says it is essential to encourage them to step outside their comfort zone, as this is where improvements are made.

He also says he is proud of how they have come together as a team in just a few short months. Despite a few significant injuries, the students have been able to forge close bonds and compensate. “At the start of the year they were a group of individuals, and now they are working as a team, it’s really great to see.”
