Our RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth, Propagation and Development is a theory-based qualifications which explains the scientific principles, which underpin horticultural practices providing a route to employment in horticulture and a foundation for further learning.

Under the guidance of expert lecturers this theory based course offers greater opportunities for employment, excellent grounding for further skills development but also a valuable qualification for those looking to increase their understanding of horticulture for personal use.

Our Horticulture students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. You will have the opportunity to see glass house demonstrations and visit our arboretum and science laboratories to support your theoretical learning.

Plant classification, structure and function

  • Characteristics and the naming of the main groups of plants and their life cycles
  • Structure and function of plant cells, tissues, vegetative organs, flowers, fruits and seeds
  • Importance of photosynthesis, respiration, and the movement of water and minerals through the plant Plant nutrition and the root environment
  • Physical and chemical properties of soils
  • Importance of organic matter in the root environment
  • Plant nutrition provided by soil and other growing media
  • Uses of growing media Maintaining plant health
  • Importance of using safe, healthy and environmentally sustainable practices for the maintenance of plant health
  • Problems posed by weeds, pests, diseases and plant disorders in horticulture and how these problems can be minimised Plant propagation
  • The role of seeds in plant propagation
  • Methods of propagation from seeds and spores
  • The role of vegetative reproduction in plant propagation
  • Methods of vegetative propagation

The total cost for this course is £497 which includes tuition and exam fees.

You will also require a pen and note pad for taking notes.

This course will take place on Mondays, starting at 10:00am and finishing at 3:00pm.

The RHS L2 Certificate in the Principles of Garden Planning, Establishment and Maintenance is assessed by four written exams, two exams in February and two exams in June. To achieve this qualification all four-unit exams must be completed and achieved.

Progression onto the RHS level 3 practical and theory courses.

You will have gained a range of horticultural knowledge relevant to employment in various roles in commercial plant production and the horticultural sector, such as a head gardener or supervisor in private, public, or botanic gardens or parks and urban green spaces.

No formal qualifications required. Because of the demands of this exam-based course, students must be independent learners with well-developed literacy and study skills. This intensive qualification requires commitment to ensure all aspects are achieved.

This course is a stand-alone qualification, which can be achieved and certified separately. However, it also forms half of the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture and one third of the RHS L2 Diploma in the Principles and Practice of Horticulture. Access to a computer would be beneficial to access the wealth of resources from home.
