This study programme is designed to provide a solid foundation in animal care and husbandry and is suitable for anyone looking to progress onto further education, training or employment in the animal industry. This course aims to develop confidence, knowledge and skills and is the ideal platform for progression onto our Level 3 provision.

Animal Care students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College, including our amazing Animal Welfare Centre which houses over 130 different domestic and exotic species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates, with our monkeys and wallabies being amongst the favourites. If you want to be part of the next generation of Animal Welfare specialists, this is the course for you!

Guided by our expert lecturers you will expand your mind and ambition in the animal care industry. You will develop your animal care knowedge and skills, learning about Safe Working, Animal Health, Biology, Behaviour, Feeding, Accommodation and Wildlife & Conservation. You will also continue to develop your English and maths skills which are vital for success in the animal industry. You will complete work experience internally on our working Animal Welfare Centre and complete external work experience in the animal care industry as part of your qualification.

Veterinary Tunic, Over Trousers and Work Safety Boots are required to undertake this course. All of our equipment is supplied by Baca.

This is a full time study programme, including three days of college attendance, one work experience day (in an external animal related establishment) and one study day. The average college day runs from 9am - 4:30pm where there will be a mixture of practical and theory animal care lessons, in addition to English, maths and personal development lessons.

This vocational qualification is taught through a mixture of college based practical and theory lessons, with further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study. Assessment consists of internally set coursework and assignments. There is the possibility that this qualification may contain some externally set assessments (e.g. online exam) from September.

After successful completion of the course, many students progress on to study a Level 3 Diploma / Extended Diploma in Animal Management full-time or an apprenticeship. Alternatively, students go into careers including Animal technician, Kennel/Cattery Assistant, Dog Groomer or Zoo Keeper.

Four GCSEs at grade 3 (D) or above (to include English and Science), or a Level 1 Diploma with a Merit grade in a related subject.
