Our Arable Unit, based at Lodge Farm, demonstrates high standards of management, economic and physical achievement in the operation of a cereal, oilseed rape, field beans and forage based rotation as a primary enterprise within the College farm system.
Cereal varieties grown in 2016/17 were milling wheats Skyfall and Siskin, soft wheat Leeds, Glacier winter barley and Propino spring barley. Oilseed rape varieties were Elgar, Artic and DK Imperial (Clearfield variety) plus Tundra winter beans. The farm has a 960 t grain store and grain in marketed throughout the year to cooperatives and merchants. Harvest 2017 yields were Winter wheat 10.1 t/ha, Winter barley 7.5 t/ha and Winter oilseed rape 3.6 t/ha.
In view of the government’s Agri-Tech strategy, the Arable Unit focuses on developing knowledge and skills in the use of high-tech, such as GPS and precision farming.
