Last week Moulton College was pleased to welcome Bill Cairns, Construction Director of Redrow Homes Limited to discuss apprenticeship opportunities in construction management and across the trades. Redrow is one of the UK's leading residential property developers and this year celebrates 40 years in the industry. The company is looking to take on 40 new apprentices nationally to mark this anniversary. Bill is looking to recruit apprentices in site management, brickwork, carpentry and plumbing and came to discuss the support Moulton College could give in both the recruitment and training of these new apprentices.
Bill Cairns started his construction career as a carpentry apprentice. He moved into site management when he was 20 years old and has now progressed to become Construction Director at the South Midlands office in Northampton, demonstrating the excellent progression possibilities for any young person considering a career in construction.
The construction industry needs to attract more young workers and the apprenticeship scheme is one way to achieve this. A recent CIOB study highlighted that, in the construction industry, the total number of workers over 60 years old has increased more than any other age group and the biggest reduction is in the total of workers under 30. There has never been a better time to consider a construction career. Moulton College has a range of courses for the next generation of the construction workforce, including a range of trades and also level 3 BTEC and higher education courses for people looking to start or move into a career in the technical or management side of construction.
