Moulton College personal training students have been involved with several fitness events over the past academic year, working with a local events company, Just Racing UK, as well as the Northamptonshire Sport Leisure Trust.
These events have included a family fun day at Lings Forum in Weston Favell. The day was designed to advertise the fantastic range of facilities available in one of Trilogy’s facilities whilst also engaging children and parents in sporting activities to combat ever rising levels of obesity in this country.
On the athletic front, the students have been helping to marshal whilst offering advice in the Just Racing UK running and triathlon events. These events have proved very popular, with turnouts from the surrounding counties as well as further afield from locations such as Yorkshire and Sussex. The competitors have ranged from just over 350 participants at the smaller activities to being in excess of 850 for the larger and more challenging activities.
The events have required students to give up their weekends to be at the college for 6am and then help the company to set up, organise and run the activities. The students have always been complimented on their attitude and effort to encourage many people who are taking on challenges for the first time, ranging from 5K runs to half marathons.
This has provided students with a real insight into the logistics of running a large scale event and the planning that goes behind it. It also allows them excellent exposure to the public so that they can begin to make a name for themselves in the highly competitive world that is the fitness industry.
Volunteering opportunities like this have helped the College to develop partnerships with these companies, which has led to level 3 students being able to complete their 80 hours’ work experience placements in the council owned Trilogy gyms as well as the Derngate gym in Northampton.
This places the students in a strong position in terms of future employment when they finish the course this summer. It also allows them to demonstrate to the public the strong skill set they have developed in their time at the College.
You can see Moulton’s finest students at Just Racing UK’s next event which is the Duston triathlon on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of April. Here they will be helping out with the children’s event on the Saturday and the adult event on the Sunday.
If you are interested in developing your interest in working in the fitness industry there are still places available for the level 2 and level 3 courses starting in September 2014. Please contact Student Services on firstname.lastname@example.org or 01604 491131.
