This year saw the start of a Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Sustainable Built Environment at Moulton College. This has been developed with employers, colleges, universities and sector skills councils to bridge the skills gap and provide employers and individuals with access to work-based learning at university level.
Eleven apprentices enrolled on this course in September and after six months on the course they are all enjoying their learning and making excellent progress.
Jonjo McBride works for Milton Keynes Council as a trainee Highways Civil Engineer. He enrolled on the apprenticeship with the support of his employer since he believes that “there will always be a need for construction and there will always be opportunities within the industry, especially at the moment with the country coming out of recession and demands for skilled construction workers growing.”
Three apprentices are former Moulton College students who were successful in securing local employment at the end of their course rather than opting for full time university. Kieran Garlick is employed as a trainee quantity surveyor with local firm NRI Civils. Despite having offers to attend several universities including Loughborough and Nottingham Trent, Kieran decided to follow a Higher Level Apprenticeship. He believes that he made a good choice by following an apprenticeship, stating, “I am learning at a similar pace to my friends at university whilst obtaining valuable industrial experience which will support me as I progresses through my career. I also have the bonus that I will not have a large debt at the end of my course and I am earning a good wage while studying.”
Arran Took is now an apprentice with Maypine Construction. He advised other students to consider an apprenticeship route, stating, “it is hard work to fit a university level qualification around a full time job but it is very rewarding and I can get support from work colleagues to help me succeed.”
