Four current Moulton College Rugby Academy students, Conor Bullivant, Harry Sheppard, Owen Griffiths and Cameron Lee Everton, represented England U18 Clubs and Schools in April in a tri-nations contest based in France. The students had worked hard to be selected and were rewarded with a trip to the French National Rugby centre in Marcoussis.
As part of the selection process the students had to play against Bedford U18 containing a number of their fellow Moulton rugby students. Student Owen Griffiths said, “It was a little bit weird facing off against the guys from the College but with the motivation of an England cap I soon got past that.”
Dave Reed, head coach of the team put into context the opportunity the players had, “To be allowed to play and train at Marcoussis is a fantastic experience in itself,” Reed said. “Some of the players will never have been in a seven-eight day environment where all they do is live and breathe rugby.” He went on to comment, “we aim to develop the players as individuals as well as rugby players and we do that by instilling in them the RFU’s Core Values of Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship.”
The Moulton College players could have not agreed more, with Moulton College captain Harry Sheppard commenting, “It was a fantastic trip and an honour to have been selected. This was made all the more special with having the lads from the College on the trip. With games against Ireland and France, we knew it was going to be a tough and physical tournament”.
The games certainly proved that, with the team being edged out in a very open contest against Ireland 30-22 and losing to a physical French side 23-9, despite leading twice.
