Basketball - competing at an elite level

Recently the Basketball Academy visited the University of Worcester where students were given the opportunity to experience what it is like to be at university and compete in elite level sport.

The University of Worcester is renowned for its Basketball Programme and represents a great progression route for our basketball academy students. The University men’s team have currently won the last 4 British and Universities and Colleges Championships and have an affiliation to Worcester Wolves Professional Basketball Club who compete in the British Basketball League (BBL).

During the visit the students received a Higher Education talk showing the different courses students can progress on to once they have completed their Extended Diploma in Sport Development, Coaching and Fitness. This was accompanied by a tour of the University to explore the sporting facilities available to students at university and our students quickly realised that our facilities are equally impressive.

The University Lecturing staff delivered a sports performance testing seminar to the students who got to participate in a wide range of skill and physical fitness tests related to basketball.

To conclude the trip, the Basketball Academy got to see the Worcester Wolves win 83-78 in a thrilling encounter against the London Lions at Worcester Arena. Our students had the opportunity to meet the players and coaching staff, and were given the opportunity for a question and answers session. Students received first-hand advice of how to play basketball at the highest level in Britain alongside balancing their academic studies along with guidance how to advance through the player pathway.

First year AASE Basketball Academy student Alfie Fox commented “I really enjoyed the visit to the University of Worcester. This has given me a great insight to progression routes to where I can continue to study sport and play basketball.”
