Following successful completion of his Extended Diploma in Construction, Moulton student Phil Johnson has decided to move on to University in a slightly different way; he has secured a job as an apprentice with VolkerFitzpatrick to help build the new Waterside Campus for the University of Northampton.
VolkerFitzpatrick have been working with the L3 Extended Diploma students throughout this academic year. This started with an engaging careers talk from Calvin Howe in December 2015 which also outlined the infrastructure work required to regenerate the brownfield site into a state of the art University campus. Four students were then selected to undertake some work experience on the site in January 2016. VolkerFitzpatrick also offered Construction Management students the opportunity to visit the new site in February 2016 where students were given an overview of the project and heard talks about the work involved from a range of professionals including quantity surveyors, planners and engineers. Students then undertook a full health and safety induction followed by a site walk. Students commented that the day was very interesting and that it was really eye-opening to see the reality of what they learn in their lectures in practice.
Phil Johnson will be continuing his education while working on the University project on an Advanced Apprenticeship in Construction Contracting Operations, which will allow him to further apply the theoretical knowledge gained on his Extended Diploma into the workplace. It is hoped that this will be the start of a successful career for Phil with VolkerFitzpatrick with the possibility of progression onto a Higher Apprenticeship in partnership with Moulton College.
The college works closely with employers across construction and Phil is the first of this year’s completing students to be signed up as an apprentice. Over the last few years the college has worked with employers across Northamptonshire and beyond to support learners into the workplace through apprenticeships, and the first Higher Apprenticeship graduates are currently due to complete their Higher Apprenticeship in September, gaining both an HND and L5 NVQ. This group includes 3 former Moulton College Extended Diploma students who have all secured permanent jobs with the companies they currently work for. These companies have commended the benefit that the students and training has brought to their business and many are now looking for new apprentices to support business growth.
