BST gym in Northampton specialises in fitness for individuals interested in differing forms of self-defence and martial arts. Higher education Moulton College student Mkhululi ‘Shep’ Nkomo has always had a keen interest in martial arts and decided it was here that he wanted to complete his work experience placement.
Since starting his placement at the end of June, Shep has gained an insight into the health and fitness industry whilst developing the leadership skills that he requires to help him complete his Foundation degree in Sports Performance and Coaching at Moulton College. Through his dedication and willingness to learn and apply his current level of understanding, Shep has been able to progress to assisting in the delivery of technical sessions such as boxing. He has also opened discussions regarding a full-time paid position within the company as an assistant and he puts this down to his confidence and level of knowledge developed during his studies at Moulton College.
Shep stated, ‘During my first year of study at Moulton College I have been able to develop my ability to lead fitness sessions and gain an understanding into the requirements of an athlete. This has allowed my confidence levels to increase, along with my motivation to succeed in the industry. The placement at BST gym has given me the opportunity to apply the skills I have learnt at Moulton College and they have been excellent in allowing me the chance to showcase my ability’.
Shep now hopes to continue working at BST beyond the completion of his work placement and he also intends to volunteer as a teaching assistant within a secondary school in the local area so he can compare his two favoured career paths. Whilst pursuing these career aspirations he is under no illusion that without the successful completion of his academic studies, his choices will become limited and he is thankful for the support and expertise he receives at Moulton College.
Shep’s willingness to offer his services and get himself into the industry has shown the importance of gaining valuable work experience whilst studying at degree level. In a fiercely competitive environment, Shep has given himself a head start by making contacts and developing relationships with key industry contacts. Shep has already been discussing the positives of his experience with his year group and is desperately trying to encourage others to arrange work placements to aid their self-development and enhance their own CVs in readiness for making the move from academic study into industry.
