Sports students at Moulton College recently visited the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield as part of the enrichment of their studies in Sports and Exercise Sciences and Sports Development, Coaching and Fitness.
EIS Sheffield is one of the UK's most impressive indoor sports facilities and the students were not only able to tour this fantastic facility, but also to train and take part in a variety of activities. This included the use of the badminton hall and the 200m indoor athletics track, where they were coached by Ashley who is part of the GB training squad hoping for a place at Rio 2016.
The clear highlight of the day was when the students discovered that Jessica Ennis, Olympic Heptathlon Gold medal winner, was training at EIS while they were there. Not only did the students have the opportunity to be photographed with her, but they also watched her train and took part in activities on the same track that she was training on.
Sports and Exercise Course Manager, Charlotte Franks, said, ‘The students always enjoy the trip to EIS as it is very engaging for them. However, this year was extra special. Watching Jess train was very inspirational for all 90 students’. Emily Woodward, Sport Development Course Manager, added, ‘This is the first year that I have brought my groups to EIS – we had no idea that Jess would be training – a fantastic trip’.
Jessica Ennis was named Runner-up in this year’s ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ just 48 hours after her training session at the English Institute of Sport.
