Foundation Degree in Agriculture student Joe Greenfield was recently invited to meet Defra secretary Owen Paterson at the Houses of Parliament as one of the country’s brightest young arable farmers. Joe has taken part in the five month long Cereals Development Programme, an initiative jointly sponsored by the NFU and grain co-operative Openfield. The initiative intends to encourage younger farmers to take up public-facing and official roles by helping them gain specific skills and confidence at the same time as improving their business skills.

Joe communicated his thoughts in the April edition of British Farmers & Growers, and stated ‘This has been a fantastic programme – it’s the sort of thing you don’t normally get the chance to do. I really enjoyed the media training and getting a real understanding of how the NFU works. I think it’s important we keep banging the drum from our own corner to the Secretary of State (to promote the cause of British farming)’.
