Research Interests and Current Research
Alex is running an MPhil research project investigating the challenges, benefits and management of ground-based solar photovoltaic arrays ('solar farms') in the UK farming industry.
The project has been inspired by the coincidence of growing financial pressure on UK agriculture and the proliferation of renewable technologies seeking to fulfil the EU obligations for reduction of carbon emissions.
The initial aims are to assess solar farms as a diversification venture and develop a toolkit for farmers and landowners to inform the efficacy of management practices from economic, social and environmental perspectives. Of particular interest is the dichotomy between energy and food production, and the integration of measures to enhance biodiversity.
