This study programme is designed to provide a platform for students to develop their confidence in animal care studies and to progress onto further animal care education, training or employment. This course offers an excellent opportunity for young people that have been out of education and are looking for an opportunity to progress into the industry.

Animal Care students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College. Our Animal Care students have access to an exciting range of specialist resources at the College, including our amazing Animal Welfare Centre which houses over 130 different domestic and exotic species, including mammals, reptiles, birds, fish, amphibians and invertebrates, with our monkeys and wallabies being amongst the favourites. If you want to be part of the next generation of Animal Welfare specialists, this is the course for you!

Guided by our expert team of Animal Welfare specialists, you will learn the basic principles of animal care, including Safe Working, Accommodation, Feeding, Handling and Behaviour through practical and classroom-based learning. You will also continue to develop your English and maths skills which are vital for success in the animal industry. You will complete work experience internally on our working Animal Welfare Centre and be encouraged to complete external work experience in the animal care industry as part of your qualification.

Veterinary Tunic, Over Trousers and Work Safety Boots are required to undertake this course. All of our equipment is supplied by Baca.

This is a full time study programme, including three days of college attendance, one work experience day (in an external animal related establishment) and one study day. The average college day runs from 9am - 4:30pm where there will be a mixture of practical and theory animal care lessons,in addition to English, maths and personal development lessons.

This qualification is taught through college based practical and theory lessons with some further learning and understanding developed via directed self-study. Assessment consists of internally set coursework and topics tests.

After successful completion of the course, many students progress to a Level 2 full-time course or apprenticeship. Students may go on to work at Assistant level within kennels, pet shops, zoos or rescue centres. Other employment opportunities are also available.

GCSEs at 1-2 (E-G) or equivalent or an Entry Level 3 Diploma in a related subject. A basic competency in reading and writing is required.
