This T Level Week, we are celebrating former Moulton College student Owen Boucher, whose industry placement helped him secure a permanent job in ground engineering.
18 year old Owen studied our Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level here at Moulton College, and combined classroom learning and practical skills development with a 45-day placement at Northamptonshire-based Soiltechnics.
After impressing the team there with his enthusiasm and commitment, he was offered a permanent technician role in the company’s Fabric Surveys department. He now works on technical drawings and analysis and will begin working towards an NVQ as he develops his skills further.
From classroom learning to real projects
Owen joined Moulton College in 2024. Over the two-year course, he explored subjects including building and digital technology, project management, measurement, design, sustainability and health and safety. His dedication during his time here impressed his lecturers so much that he earned the College’s T Level Student of the Year award in 2025.
Alongside his studies, Owen’s placement at Soiltechnics gave him the opportunity to put his learning into practice, contribute to projects and learn from experienced professionals. Owen says:
Making an impression
Soiltechnics specialises in ground-related risk management and building fabric investigation, supporting projects across the UK in areas including infrastructure, education, land development and restoration.
For Managing Director Sarah Drage, Owen’s placement was an opportunity to see his potential while helping him explore where a construction career could take him. She says:
“Once he completed his T Level qualification, we were delighted to offer him a permanent role. He is a tremendous asset to our team and is already making his mark.”
Owen’s story highlights what makes industry placements such a valuable part of a T Level, including the chance to develop practical skills, build confidence and discover career opportunities while still studying. For employers, placements also offer an opportunity to support young people and help develop the industry’s future workforce.
Sarah adds: “At Soiltechnics, offering student placements is integral to our role as a local employer in the community. Whether it is a week or six-week placement, it is valuable for both the student and for our company, too. The future of the engineering and construction sector rests on its people and we want to play our role in attracting new entrants into the industry by offering placements.”
As we celebrate T Level Week, we are proud to recognise Owen’s achievements and the employers who help our students take their next steps.
