Our Animal Centre once again approved by Balai

Wednesday 2 October 2019

Every year, our Animal Welfare Centres undergo an inspection by the Balai Directive, to check that they are meeting requirements.

The Balai Directive sets out the conditions for the import and export of various species of animals within the EU which are not covered by other legislation. It is there to trace the movement of animals and to ensure that facilities are free from disease and have adequate isolation and biosecurity measures in place.

To gain approval, the inspection is carried out by a veterinary officer from the Animal Plant and Health Agency (APHA) which includes a check of all animal welfare facilities (Main Site and ENVSA) and a comprehensive look at documentation covering movement records, protocols, isolation and veterinary programmes, plus a meeting with staff and our exotics vet.

We’re pleased to say that, once again, this year’s inspection went very well with no recommendations. The Animal Welfare Centre team work incredibly hard to ensure that high standards of industry and Balai expectations are continuously met, including all necessary paperwork and record keeping.

Great work to all of the staff at the Animal Welfare Centre. Keep up the good work!
